Mother and 9-Year-Old Son Found Dead in Suspected Murder-Suicide, Police Say

A mother and her young son were found dead from gunshot wounds inside their Indianapolis apartment on Monday in what police are treating as a murder-suicide.

Shatayvia Alisha Calderon, 33, and Julian Calderon, 9, were discovered in a condominium complex on the 4400 block of Village Lane shortly after 1 p.m., according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Medical officials declared both dead at the scene, and a gun was recovered from the apartment.

Officer Drew Brown addressed the tragedy in a statement to WTHR, emphasizing the department’s dual focus on investigation and support.

“This is unthinkable. And we’re here to not only investigate, but to provide resources, as well. Not only here on scene, but in the days, weeks that follow this,” Brown said.

A police spokesperson told The Post that the incident is “believed to be a murder-suicide in which the mother killed her son and then herself.” The spokesperson did not elaborate on what evidence led to that determination.

Investigators have been interviewing a cooperative witness, though authorities did not identify the person or specify what information they provided. Police also have not indicated what may have led up to the shooting or whether there was any documented history of domestic disturbances or mental health concerns at the residence.

The deaths mark another violent tragedy involving a parent and child in the Indianapolis area, adding to a series of murder-suicide cases that have drawn national attention in recent months. The IMPD has not announced any additional suspects or persons of interest in the case.

Authorities have not yet released details about funeral arrangements for Calderon and her son. The Marion County Coroner’s Office is expected to conduct autopsies to confirm the official causes and manner of death.
