Topless Man Sparks California Freeway Chaos by Scaling Bridge and Snarling Traffic

A topless woman who scaled a freeway sign and clung there for more than two hours was finally coaxed into the arms of rescuers Monday evening in Santa Ana, California.

The incident began during rush hour on the 55 Freeway, where the woman climbed onto an exit sign platform suspended above the roadway. California Highway Patrol and Orange County Fire Authority officials responded quickly, shutting down northbound and southbound lanes at an overpass south of 17th Street to begin the rescue operation.

The standoff stretched past two and a half hours as crisis negotiators worked to secure her safety. At one point during the ordeal, officials said, the woman threatened to jump from the sign. Rescuers set up a cushion below and raised a fire ladder as part of the effort to reach her.

“After approximately 2.5 hours of negotiations, SAPD Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) members were able to convince the woman to surrender,” the Santa Ana Police Department wrote on Facebook.

“She was safely brought down with assistance from Orange County Fire Authority and taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation,” the department continued in its post.

The woman eventually stepped into the arms of first responders who had climbed to her position on a raised platform, bringing the prolonged incident to a close.

“Thank you to everyone for your patience as officers worked to bring this situation to a safe resolution,” the Santa Ana Police Department added on the social media platform.

Authorities have not indicated whether the woman will face any charges related to the incident. She was transported to a local hospital following her surrender, with officials prioritizing mental health evaluation over potential prosecution.

Santa Ana, where the incident occurred, ranks among the largest cities in Orange County and sits roughly 32 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. The 55 Freeway serves as a major artery through the region, meaning the lane closures rippled outward during the peak evening commute.

The rescue required coordination between multiple agencies, with the Santa Ana Police Department’s crisis negotiators taking the lead in communications while fire authority personnel handled the physical extraction. The decision to halt traffic in both directions reflected the severity of the situation and the need to protect both the woman and the emergency workers attempting to reach her.
