Glenn Close has broken her silence on why she has been relying on a cane in recent public appearances.
The 79-year-old Oscar nominee revealed in an Instagram video Tuesday that she recently underwent a complete hip replacement. Close, the “Fatal Attraction” and “101 Dalmatians” star, recorded the message to address fan concern after she was photographed using the mobility aid earlier this month at the NYC premiere of “La Bola Negra” during 2026 NewFest.
“I wanted to just hop on and thank you for all of your love, and to explain why I have a cane,” she said in the clip.
“I have a cane because I have had a complete hip replacement.”
Close explained that the procedure became necessary after she “found out that [her] left hip was in really bad shape.” She described her current focus as keeping herself “in running order so that [she] can really leap into whatever challenges come [her] way.”
The three-time Emmy Award winner reassured followers that the cane is only temporary. She outlined an ambitious upcoming schedule that includes travel to London for the “Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” premiere next week, followed by a return to New York for the second season premiere of “All’s Fair.”
“So, I hope to be fully present there, and maybe not running around going up mountains, but at least my old self,” she added.
In the video’s caption, Close called the post “a needed explanation” and expressed gratitude to her doctor at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York for her “new hip.” The actress also appeared in the clip wearing a frownie, a facial patch designed to smooth wrinkles, on her forehead.
“So, love to everyone. Don’t worry. I’m feeling great. I have my wonderful, wonderful family around me, and I look forward to all the adventures coming, so love to everyone,” she concluded.
The disclosure comes as Close continues a busy stretch of professional commitments despite her recovery. Beyond the immediate premieres, she is slated to receive an honorary Oscar at the 17th Governors Awards in Hollywood next month.
The Governors Awards ceremony will take place in Hollywood.
