4-Year-Old Boy Mauled to Death by American Bully Dog as Mourners Say ‘He Didn’t Deserve This’

A Virginia aunt is mourning her 4-year-old nephew after he was fatally mauled by an American bully dog while his older brother watched helplessly.

Garcia Welch, who had just started preschool at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, was attacked Sunday while spending the weekend with his father in Louisa County, according to the county sheriff’s office. Responders rushed the boy to a landing area for airlift to a hospital, but he was declared dead before he could be loaded onto the helicopter. Police were forced to shoot and kill the dog while it was still biting him, the sheriff’s office said.

Cynthia Russ, Garcia’s aunt, described the child to WVIR as a boy who made friends everywhere he went. “He was a beautiful kid,” she said. “He was fun and sweet and kind and he made friends everywhere. And he just, he didn’t deserve this.”

She added, “He just had so much ahead of him and we were just excited to see it.”

Garcia’s older brother Gabriel witnessed the attack and desperately tried to intervene, according to Russ. “I talked to my nephew that night and he was just crying and he was screaming,” she recalled.

Cathleen Russ, Garcia’s mother, said her son had been staying with his father for the weekend. The couple had recently separated.

The boy’s love of music and video games bonded him closely with Gabriel, his aunt shared. His brief time at Thomas Jefferson Elementary had already left a mark on staff and students alike.

Principal Jesse Cleaver addressed the school community in a letter, noting that although Garcia “was just beginning his time at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, he quickly made a meaningful impression on those around him with his kind, friendly, and respectful personality.”

Police have not disclosed who owned the dog or whether any adults were present during the attack, a silence that has alarmed local residents.

The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the mauling.
