A South African father is being hailed as a hero after he fatally shot an armed carjacker while shielding his daughter from gunfire outside their newly purchased home.
Sidney Hill, an operations manager in Durban, was pulling out of his driveway in Pinetown on Oct. 9 with his daughter riding in the passenger seat of his Toyota Hilux when a white Renault carrying five people abruptly blocked their path, according to Afrikaans outlet Maroela Media, which reported the story Thursday. Two armed men rushed from the vehicle and opened fire on the Hills.
Hill drew his own firearm from his side and returned fire from the driver’s seat without hesitation, leaning back to cover his daughter as he unleashed a volley of shots at the attacking crew. The windshield of his pickup truck cracked under the barrage of bullets, and his vehicle lurched forward and struck a tree during the exchange.
The family had moved into the home just four days before the ambush, and Hill had been waiting in the driveway for his son to finish closing the gate when the attackers struck. His daughter’s age has not been disclosed.
Pinetown Police spokesperson Paul Magwaza confirmed to the Highway Mail that Hill killed one of the gang members in the gunfight. The four surviving suspects fled the scene and remain at large.
Marshall Security official Andreas Mathios, known locally as the “Durban superman,” praised Hill’s composure under fire and his priority of protecting his family.
“This man is a hero,” Mathios said.
“He firstly and instinctively made sure that his family was safe. He was consistently alert, and even though there was some sort of delay in returning fire when he was fired upon at the right time, he managed to return fire and neutralize the threat. I commend him for his actions,” he continued.
Footage of the shootout has circulated widely online, drawing thousands of reactions from viewers who marveled at Hill’s steady marksmanship and protective instincts.
“You are the example of what a real dad does,” one viewer wrote.
“They picked a wrong guy,” another commented, mocking the failed carjackers.
“Those children must be severely traumatized,” a third person posted. “It’s so bloody unnecessary that one has to go through this.”
Multiple viewers noted that Hill appeared completely unfazed throughout the life-or-death confrontation, maintaining his position and continuing to fire even as his truck took damage and his daughter sat inches away.
South African social media users have directed calls at Nhlanhla “Lucky” Sibusiso Mkhwanazi, the provincial police commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, urging him to recruit Hill for his team based on his demonstrated combat skills and protective instincts.
Police have opened two parallel investigations into the incident: one for attempted murder and another for attempted carjacking. Authorities have not indicated whether Hill faces potential charges for his use of lethal force in defending himself and his daughter.
