Police Say Bullies Planted Fake Shooting Threat to Smear Teen Hero They Beat Up

Florida authorities have arrested nine students over a brutal off-campus assault on a teen who intervened to stop cafeteria bullying, then moved to debunk a fabricated shooting threat they say was planted to smear the victim.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the rumor was “to make the victim look bad” and distract from the beatdown that sent the 17-year-old to the hospital with 11 stitches in his head, according to the Osceola County Gazette and Fox 35 Orlando.

Maj. Alejandro Guevara delivered a stark warning during a Friday morning press conference about consequences for anyone spreading false information. “We want to send a clear message to students sending clear misinformation and mislead the active investigation since the fight: we are going to arrest you, whether in school or out of school, and it’s not funny anymore,” he said.

Officials determined there was “no way possible” the teen was planning an attack on the Harmony High School football game against St. Cloud High School, which proceeded as scheduled Friday night. Deputies reached their conclusion after interviewing the victim and his family.

Capt. Kimberly Montes of the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office did not mince words about the attackers. “This was a serious attack,” she told Fox 35 Orlando. “This was not one-on-one, two-on-one — this was nine students against one, and we’re just lucky he didn’t receive more serious injuries than what he got.”

Montes reserved her sharpest criticism for the group dynamic at play. “We tell kids all the time, ‘Stand up for somebody else!’ It takes a lot of courage to do that. He did this and these nine students that beat him up are the ones that are cowards,” she said.

The assault’s alleged ringleaders, Brian Alexander Ramirez, 18, and Quianelle Antonio Reyes-Cintron, 18, appeared before a judge Thursday. “You’ve been arrested on a warrant in which a court has already found probable cause,” the judge told Ramirez, according to Fox 35 Orlando.

Reyes-Cintron’s attorney pushed back on his client’s involvement, claiming no evidence showed he touched the victim. The attorney noted that while the affidavit cites videos depicting Reyes-Cintron, it did not state he was making contact with anyone.

The nine arrested students include one who is just 14 years old. They were taken into custody Wednesday after video of the assault circulated.

The incident began in the Harmony High School cafeteria when the victim told bullies to stop throwing carrots at a girl, sparking an argument with two of them before he left with the girl, officials said. After the final bell, one of the original bullies followed him to the parking lot, where eight others joined the attack.

The victim’s intervention on behalf of the bullied girl has drawn praise from law enforcement even as the violence against him has drawn outrage. The case has now expanded to include the fabricated threat, which authorities say represents a second layer of victimization.

The sheriff’s office has warned that anyone attempting to mislead the investigation will face criminal charges, extending their scrutiny beyond the physical assault to the information warfare that followed.

The nine students were seen being led away in handcuffs after the teen was filmed being battered in the parking lot ambush.

The investigation continues as authorities monitor for additional false reports.
