Katy Perry has addressed the long-running conspiracy theory that claims she is actually murdered child beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey.
The “Firework” singer, who turned 42 on Saturday, responded to a social media post last March that promoted the bizarre theory using an AI deepfake. The post featured an image of Ramsey that morphed into Perry, suggesting the two were the same person. Perry commented directly on the content: “Wait am I?”
The remark sent conspiracy theorists into celebration, interpreting the non-denial as validation of their claims. Perry had previously indicated awareness of the theory, though her March response marked her most direct engagement with it to date.
The theory first emerged in 2014, nearly two decades after Ramsey’s death. At the time the six-year-old was found strangled in her Boulder, Colorado home in 1996, Perry was already twice her age and living in California under her birth name, Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson.
Ramsey’s parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, were indicted in 1999 on charges of child abuse resulting in death. Patsy Ramsey was treated for ovarian cancer and died in 2006, two years before she and her husband were formally cleared of any wrongdoing. John Ramsey remarried in 2011.
In 2024, John Ramsey said that he did not believe his daughter’s death would ever be solved unless the existing investigation received additional support. Nobody has ever been convicted in connection with the killing.
Multiple documentaries have detailed the aftermath of Ramsey’s death and the investigation that followed. The conspiracy theory that she survived and became a pop star has no basis in the documented facts of the case.
Perry’s “Wait am I?” comment came in response to the AI-generated transformation video that claimed to show Ramsey and Perry as one person. The singer did not follow up with any further clarification on the matter.
The theory has persisted online despite the clear chronological impossibility and well-documented biographical records of both individuals. Perry’s California upbringing and early career as Katheryn Hudson stand in direct contrast to Ramsey’s Colorado childhood and 1996 death.

Conspiracy theorists have continued to circulate the claim across social media platforms, with Perry’s engagement providing fresh material for those promoting the theory.
