Anna Lynch has spoken out publicly about the husband who killed their two children and himself, calling him a “wonderful dad” who spiraled into depression after losing his job.
Patrick Lynch, 42, his son James, 8, and daughter Caroline, 6, were found dead near the base of a five-story parking garage in Mt. Lebanon, an affluent Pittsburgh suburb, at roughly 4:15 p.m. Tuesday. Officials have described the incident as “not an accident,” and the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the children’s deaths homicides from multiple blunt force injuries. The father’s cause and manner of death have not been publicly released.

In a since-deleted Facebook post, Anna Lynch detailed the events leading up to the tragedy and her husband’s deteriorating mental state. “My husband made the irreversible decision to kill our two children and himself this evening,” she wrote. “He was laid off in August and shortly after became depressed.”
The grieving mother noted that she had pushed for him to seek professional help, and that he had finally agreed. “I suggested he to go to a therapist [sic], which he agreed to go to and had an appointment booked for 11/4,” she shared in the post. “One day too late.”
Patrick Lynch held an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and a master’s from Carnegie Mellon, credentials that led some coverage to note his Ivy League education. He had worked as a data scientist for Slice, a New Jersey-based restaurant point-of-sale system, for four years until his layoff in August. The family resided in a $900,000 home in the Mt. Lebanon section of Pittsburgh.
Anna Lynch’s post painted a portrait of a family she never expected to lose this way. “I never thought this is how our story would end,” she wrote. Despite the horror of her husband’s actions, she remembered him as “a wonderful dad” and celebrated her children’s distinct personalities — James’s passion for skiing, Caroline’s love of Skittles and slime. She described the slain siblings as “best friends forever.”
“Rest in peace, my angels,” the post concluded, with Anna Lynch urging those who read it to “check in on your loved ones.”

Caroline Lynch had faced significant health challenges since shortly after her birth. She was diagnosed with Williams syndrome, a rare genetic disorder affecting growth, cognition, and the cardiovascular system, as well as heart and lung disease, according to a 2025 interview Anna Lynch gave to Mt. Lebanon Magazine. That experience motivated Anna Lynch to co-found the Inclusion Collective, a non-profit focused on disability awareness, inclusion, and empowering parents as advocates.
The Allegheny County Police Department has not publicly identified a motive for the incident and declined to comment on claims about Patrick Lynch’s mental health when approached by reporters.
An online fundraiser to help Anna Lynch bury her family members had raised more than $170,000 toward a $200,000 goal as of Thursday morning. The GoFundMe page described her as someone who “devoted her life to her family and to the community,” adding that “to know her is to love her.” The organizer wrote that nothing would bring her children back or give her peace, but that easing the financial burden of burying her husband and children would offer some relief.

The parking garage deaths occurred in a community unaccustomed to such violence. Mt. Lebanon, located just outside Pittsburgh, is known for its highly rated schools and affluent residential neighborhoods. Emergency responders declared James and Caroline dead at the scene approximately 20 minutes after they were found.
