Met Gala Reveals New 2027 Theme After Scrapping Controversial John Galliano Retrospective

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has unveiled “extraORDINARY” as the new theme for its 2027 Costume Institute exhibition and Met Gala, replacing a canceled John Galliano retrospective that triggered months of internal revolt and public backlash.

The announcement landed Thursday, with the gala now set for May 3, 2027. Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, framed the pivot as deliberate provocation rather than retreat. “The ordinary is never quite as simple as it appears,” Bolton said in a statement. “A pair of jeans, a white shirt, or a sweatshirt can hold traces of a life—the habits, memories, and attachments that make something our own.”

Bolton added that the creative team wanted the replacement theme to be “as challenging and as provocative and as beautiful as a John show would have been.” The exhibition will examine how everyday workwear, casual fabrics, and mass-market silhouettes become cultural touchstones, a stark departure from the theatrical couture typically spotlighted on fashion’s biggest night.

The Galliano retrospective had been in the works before an uproar forced its abandonment. The British designer, 64, who transformed Christian Dior and later led Maison Margiela, was fired by Dior in 2011 and convicted in a French court after a viral video captured him hurling antisemitic and racist abuse at patrons in a Paris café. Though he staged a comeback through Margiela and remained visible on Hollywood red carpets, the Met’s plan to honor his legacy drew immediate condemnation from board members, donors, and cultural commentators.

In September, Galliano officially withdrew from the project. “I do not want the debate surrounding me to place The Met in a difficult position or to distract from the remarkable work of the Costume Institute,” he said at the time. “I also recognize and respect that an exhibition honoring my work would be painful for some.”

The museum has not disclosed whether Galliano retains any advisory role or relationship with the Costume Institute following his withdrawal.

Online reaction to “extraORDINARY” has already proven skeptical. Fashion critics and social media users have questioned how the Met Gala’s celebrity guest list, known for extravagant displays of wealth and avant-garde design, will interpret garments as mundane as denim and sweatshirts. Some mocked the prospect of ultra-wealthy attendees arriving in basic jeans and $5,000 designer white tees. Others expressed frustration that the Costume Institute, given the chance to start fresh, bypassed celebrated and uncontroversial fashion figures whose work remains unrepresented by the museum, naming Vivienne Westwood and Bob Mackie among those overlooked.

The original Galliano plan had represented one of the most contentious episodes in the Met’s fashion programming history, pitting institutional prestige against moral accountability in an era of heightened scrutiny over who receives institutional honor. The antisemitic incident that derailed Galliano’s career became a defining test of whether creative genius could outpace personal conduct in the calculus of legacy.

Further details on celebrity co-chairs, dress code specifics, and exhibition design will be released in early 2027.
