A black band tattoo has an X-rated meaning many people are just discovering

Social media users are newly discovering that a common black band tattoo carries an explicit sexual meaning they never knew existed.

The revelation has spread across X, formerly known as Twitter, where a post about the ink’s hidden connotation drew nearly four million views. “When I learnt the meaning of this tattoo, it changed the way I look at everyone that has one,” the user wrote. “The higher [it gets], the wilder it gets.”

That post left thousands baffled, with commenters admitting they had no idea the minimalistic design signaled anything beyond aesthetics. “What does it mean? My friend has it but I’m not sure he knows the actual meaning,” one person replied. Another joked: “How far you can reach into the Pringles can.”

The joke lands close to the actual rumored meaning. According to widespread online discussion, the double black band has been repurposed by some as a “depth marker” indicating how far someone can reach inside their lover’s rear end during sexual activity.

Queer fiction writer Lewis Laney addressed the confusion in a TikTok video originally posted in 2023. He explained that he himself sports the double arm band design and frequently fields questions from gay men who assume it relates to fisting.

“The origins of these tattoos allegedly do come from f**ting and apparently, it’s how far you can go,” Laney said in the video. “For me, that is not the case though.”

Laney, 30 at the time he got the tattoo, traced his own inspiration to gay adult actor Brent Everett, whose arm sported the same design. “I still like it, it looks good and it’s the only tattoo I’ve got and probably the only one I’ll ever have,” he continued.

He pushed back against automatic assumptions, adding: “I often say to people, if you see people with an anchor tattoo, do you automatically assume that they are a sailor? Or just that they like anchors?”

The Solong Tattoo Company offers a far more traditional reading of the two-band motif. The company lists “profound meanings that appeal to many,” including loss and mourning, strength and luck, different life stages or transitions, and cultural roots. The design’s minimalism, the company notes, “allows for personal interpretation.”

That openness to interpretation may be exactly why the alternative meaning took hold without many wearers noticing. Tattoo artists have reportedly expressed reluctance about inking the bands on customers who seem unaware of the design’s dual life online.

The black band’s mainstream visibility has grown through sports and entertainment figures who display the ink for entirely unrelated reasons, further widening the gap between personal intent and public perception.

Removal carries its own burden. Experts estimate that erasing an unwanted tattoo can require up to 15 laser sessions, making the cost of an uninformed choice steep in both money and pain.

The current wave of discovery follows a familiar pattern where subcultural signals leak into mainstream awareness through viral posts, leaving original wearers and new audiences equally surprised. Laney’s own experience captures the tension: admired for the look, questioned for the meaning, defending the ambiguity.

For those now eyeing their friends’ forearms with fresh suspicion, Laney’s broader point stands. Intent and interpretation remain separate territories, even when inked permanently into skin.
