A new first-of-its-kind U.S. study suggests invasive mold infections pose a significant health threat that may be underappreciated by the medical community and the public. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found approximately 450 confirmed cases of invasive mold disease across four Atlanta-area hospitals and affiliated outpatient clinics between 2020 and 2024, revealing a sobering mortality rate that underscores the severity of these infections.
The findings, published this week by the CDC, represent an unprecedented attempt to gauge how common invasive mold infections are at a local level. The study revealed that hospitals can expect to see 3 to 5 cases of invasive mold disease per year for every 100 inpatient beds, with rates substantially higher at larger academic hospitals that tend to treat more complicated illnesses. Notably, about one-third of the patients who contracted invasive mold disease died in the hospital.
The research team initially identified nearly 1,000 potential cases during their five-year review but narrowed the number down to approximately 450 after excluding patients who showed signs of mold exposure but did not meet diagnostic criteria for invasive mold disease. This painstaking process highlights one of the key challenges in tracking these infections: they are often difficult to identify and distinguish from other conditions.

What makes this study particularly significant is that it provides what researchers describe as the first estimate of its kind. “It’s kind of the first time we’ve had an estimate like this,” said Dr. Jeremy Gold, the study’s senior author at the CDC. Dr. Gold emphasized the importance of understanding the scope of the problem now, warning that the issue may grow in the future due to climate change and demographic shifts.
The CDC previously estimated that more than 15,000 hospitalizations each year could be linked to invasive mold disease, though reporting requirements have been absent, meaning the actual numbers have been largely unknown. Most patients who developed invasive mold infections had impaired immune systems, or in many cases, had been weakened by COVID-19. Vulnerable populations include the elderly, cancer patients, and others with compromised immune systems. Mold spores generally do not cause health problems for healthy individuals, but they can prove life-threatening to these susceptible groups.
Invasive mold diseases are rare infections caused by certain fungal species. Most people who get infected inhale mold spores, though the organisms can also enter the body through cuts, wounds, or even contaminated medical equipment used in hospitals. Common types of invasive mold infections include aspergillosis and mucormycosis. Aspergillosis, caused by the fungus Aspergillus, was identified in nearly a fifth of cases in the study, making it the most common identified pathogen.

Mold exposure has become an increasingly recurring problem in the wake of hurricanes, floods, and other natural disasters exacerbated by climate change, researchers found. Dr. Jeffrey Jenks, an infectious disease researcher at Duke University, acknowledged the link between environmental changes and infection risk. “I agree that the frequency of fungal infections will likely increase with climate change,” he said. Additionally, an aging population means a growing number of older people more susceptible to such illnesses, compounding the public health concern.
The study also identified another significant factor contributing to the problem: there is no federal requirement for doctors to report invasive mold disease cases. This lack of mandatory reporting has left health authorities with incomplete data about the true scope of the problem. The absence of standardized tracking makes it difficult for hospitals to identify outbreaks or for public health officials to prepare prevention strategies.
Beyond establishing an estimate, the research offers practical guidance for hospital administrators. The baseline data showing 3 to 5 cases per 100 inpatient beds annually can help administrators determine whether the number of cases they observe aligns with what might be expected or whether they are experiencing an outbreak. Dr. Gold cautioned, however, that it is difficult to generalize findings from Atlanta to other parts of the country where mold exposure may be more or less prevalent.
The research highlights the need for heightened awareness among medical professionals and hospital administrators about the threat posed by invasive mold infections. With mortality rates approaching or exceeding one-third of infected patients in hospital settings, and with the potential for these infections to increase in frequency due to climate change and demographic trends, the study underscores why closer attention to this emerging public health challenge is warranted.
