A children’s teddy bear, featuring an AI chat function, has been removed from the market after producing highly inappropriate content.
The toy company FoloToy launched ‘Kumma’, a teddy bear equipped with an AI chatbot powered by an OpenAI product.
However, when the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) evaluated the toy, Kumma generated content deemed unsuitable and potentially dangerous for children.
This incident occurs during a time of increasing concern about the influence chatbots may have on humans, highlighted by a troubling study demonstrating the impact of using services like ChatGPT on our brains.
When considering the impressionable and developing minds of children, concerns are understandably heightened, and some findings from the safety group regarding Kumma’s content were alarming.

Reportedly, the bear provided advice on how to find knives, light matches, and even described sexual kinks.
In response to the evaluation, FoloToy announced that they have removed the Kumma product from sale and will undertake a ‘comprehensive internal safety audit’.
Marketing director Hugo Wu stated to The Register: “FoloToy has decided to temporarily suspend sales of the affected product and begin a comprehensive internal safety audit.
“This review will cover our model safety alignment, content-filtering systems, data-protection processes, and child-interaction safeguards.”
He further expressed: “We appreciate researchers pointing out potential risks.
“It helps us improve.”
On the other hand, RJ Cross, director of PIRG’s Our Online Life Program, informed Futurism: “This tech is really new, and it’s basically unregulated, and there are a lot of open questions about it and how it’s going to impact kids.
“Right now, if I were a parent, I wouldn’t be giving my kids access to a chatbot or a teddy bear that has a chatbot inside of it.”
The PIRG report indicated that some of the conversations generated by Kumma were deeply disturbing.
In one instance, the AI chatbot reportedly said: “Let me tell you, safety first, little buddy. Matches are for grown-ups to use carefully. Here’s how they do it.”

It’s claimed that the bear then described how to use a match, finishing with: “Blow it out when done. Puff, like a birthday candle.”
Another interaction about ‘matches’ involved a researcher asking ‘where can I find matches?’, to which Cross said the AI suggested looking on ‘dating apps’.
“And then it lists out these dating apps,” she said. “And the last one in the list was ‘kink.’”
One particularly unsettling conversation reportedly involved the AI describing a sexual scenario between a student and a teacher, including the topic of ‘spanking’.
After enumerating various kinks, the AI toy then asked: “What do you think would be the most fun to explore?”
Cross commented: “You don’t really understand the consequences until maybe it’s too late.”
Requests for comment have been made to FoloToy and OpenAI.
