Artificial intelligence has demonstrated its remarkable capabilities by providing a visualization of what Jesus might have looked like.
Despite its impressive feats, AI often sparks controversy.
For instance, an AI-generated concept of the ‘perfect’ man and woman left many unimpressed, questioning the very notion of perfection.
In another instance, AI created representations of the average person from each US state, leading to some bizarre results.
Recently, AI was employed to generate an image of Jesus, amidst ongoing discussions regarding his true appearance.
The image, crafted using Midjourney, was based on the Shroud of Turin.
The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth thought to be the burial shroud of Jesus, dating back to April 3, AD 33.
According to Britannica, it has been housed since 1578 in the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista’s royal chapel in Turin, Italy.
Many believe the shroud displays a faint image of a man’s front and back, thought to be Jesus. Part of it seems to show a facial imprint, which has been digitally enhanced to produce a clearer image.
The Daily Express sought the help of Midjourney, an AI platform, to create a realistic image of Jesus Christ based on the faint shroud image.
The resulting image depicts a man with shoulder-length hair, a beard, and a moustache, resembling traditional portrayals of Jesus.
Notably, the image also shows what appear to be cuts on the face and body, possibly referencing Christ’s crucifixion.
Some historians argue that AI representations, like the one from Midjourney, may not accurately depict Jesus.
Critics often point to the skin tone, suggesting it would likely have been darker.
Dr Meredith Warren, a senior lecturer in Biblical and religious studies at Sheffield University, commented to MailOnline: “Jesus would have had brown skin, brown eyes, like the local population.
“He died before he was 40. He wasn’t rich and would have spent a lot of time outdoors, so some lines on that face, probably. His hands and feet were probably calloused and rough.”
