Corie Walsh’s attorney says the Illinois mother was in the grip of a mental health crisis when her 2-year-old son died.
Walsh, who faces murder charges in the death of her toddler Barrett, had posted warm family photos to Facebook in the months before the killing that now stand in sharp contrast to the allegations against her. Prosecutors contend she had been planning the crime for some time and intended to kill her husband as well, a claim her defense disputes.
The case has drawn national attention partly because Walsh, from Illinois, had become deeply interested in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother convicted in a separate high-profile child-killing case. That fixation emerged in the lead-up to Barrett’s death, prosecutors allege.

In a separate post marking Barrett’s birthday, she reflected on his growth since becoming a big brother.
“He’s grown leaps and bounds since becoming a big brother but still rests his head on my shoulder, when I’m arrying him up for bed, reminding me of how little he is,” she wrote.
The warmth of those public posts has become a central thread in coverage as investigators work to establish what led to Barrett’s death. The contrast between the affectionate mother portrayed online and the accused killer described by prosecutors has fueled intense public interest in the case.
Walsh’s attorney, Andrea Lyon, has framed the alleged killing as the product of a psychiatric breakdown rather than premeditated harm.
