Amal Clooney stepped out in a suede-on-suede ensemble for a theater date with George Clooney in New York.
The human rights lawyer, 48, accompanied her husband to a one-night-only reading of “Smear!” at the city’s Seaview Studio on Sunday. The political comedy was written by Clark Gregg, George’s former co-star from “Good Night, and Good Luck.”
For the occasion, Amal revived a caramel-colored Gucci suede trench from the label’s fall 2015 collection, distinguished by its rounded gold buttons. She had first worn the piece that same year to the Public Theater, pairing it then with a white Chloé dress and sandals.
Beneath the trench, she chose an off-white mock-neck minidress and black pointed-toe suede boots that stretched nearly to her thighs. She completed the look with a black handbag and gold chain earrings.
The thigh-high boot and minidress pairing is a signature formula for the barrister. She appeared to wear the same black suede pair during a February 2025 night out with George, that time styled with a gray sweater dress and matching gray coat.
Her fondness for the silhouette stretches back years. In 2018, she paired a beige suede version with a canary-yellow Lanvin coat for a dinner date with George. More recently, a January lunch with friends in Notting Hill called for thigh-grazing boots in cognac leather, worn with a Stella McCartney minidress and an Ermanno Scervino sweater.
Suede has dominated her wardrobe throughout 2025. In July, she wore a vintage Thierry Mugler suede set trimmed in fringe for a boat day in Capri. That same swishy fringe reappeared in Venice in September, when she wore an aqua and silver Caroline’s Couture minidress for a celebratory dinner.
George had previewed the couple’s plans during his Golden Lion acceptance speech, telling the audience, “We’re going to go find a fun place to have dinner, my wife and I,” He continued, “she’s going to be wearing a very nice dress so we’ll have to be careful where we go.”
The Clooneys’ Sunday theater outing marked a rare public appearance together in the city, with Amal’s archival Gucci trench demonstrating her practice of revisiting standout pieces from her wardrobe rather than relying solely on new acquisitions.
Her systematic reuse of key items — the 2015 trench, the recurring black boots — contrasts with the constant turnover typical of celebrity dressing, suggesting a more personal relationship with her collection.
