Amanda Seyfried Faces Harsh Criticism as Viewers Slam Her Behavior in Elizabeth Holmes Documentary

Amanda Seyfried is drawing fierce viewer backlash over her onscreen conduct in Nathan Fielder’s new Elizabeth Holmes documentary.

The actress, 39, appears in “You Can See Everything,” released Oct. 16, which tracked Holmes through her final 34 days of freedom before the Theranos founder reported to Federal Prison Camp Bryan on May 30, 2023. Seyfried, who won acclaim for portraying Holmes in Hulu’s 2022 limited series “The Dropout,” reunited with the subject in a project that tasked her with helping Fielder recreate his own prison correspondence with the convicted fraudster.

Seyfried’s documentary participation centered on restaging conversations between Fielder and Holmes, but viewers quickly seized on what they perceived as the actress’s shifting loyalties. The film captured Seyfried wrestling with mounting sympathy for Holmes even as the imprisoned entrepreneur challenged Seyfried’s dramatic interpretation of the Theranos scandal.

“Amanda Seyfried defending Holmes as a victim of male manipulation until Holmes accused her of participating in a sensationalized version of the Theranos scandal and then flipping out about how it is just TV was a [sic] truly gross,” one X user wrote. “I hope she gets redragged for it.”

The criticism intensified around Seyfried’s apparent pivot when scrutiny turned toward her own role in dramatizing Holmes’s downfall. “Lots of ‘women protecting women’ posturing from her until she gets accused of perhaps also causing Elizabeth some degree of pain, after which she immediately deflects and starts engaging in female emotional manipulation by accusing Nathan of covering up for Elizabeth based on her ‘intuition,'” another user said.

A third viewer framed Seyfried’s documentary presence as revealing. “This is maybe the number one reason why I loved ‘You Can See Everything.’ Seeing Amanda Seyfried for her true colors in full hypocrisy was such a cathartic feeling,” the user said. “It reminds me why we should never take people like her seriously.”

The backlash was not unanimous. Several viewers argued Seyfried’s evolving stance was precisely the documentary’s intended architecture rather than personal failing. “imagine walking away from this blaming amanda seyfried,” a user wrote. “the point is, amanda herself changes her opinion on elizabeth holmes. So does nathan fielder. So does the audience. Thats the literal point.”

Another defender emphasized Seyfried’s self-examination as distinctive within the film. “At no point in the movie does Elizabeth Holmes reckon with how anyone other than her was harmed by the downfall of Theranos. Amanda Seyfried earnestly reckons with the consequences of her actions even when she is (correctly) pretty sure she didn’t do anything wrong,” the user added.

The documentary itself examined Holmes’s campaign to reclaim narrative control after Theranos collapsed. The blood-testing company, which Holmes founded, had promised revolutionary diagnostic technology before investigations exposed fundamental failures in its capabilities. A jury convicted Holmes in January 2022 on four federal fraud charges, including one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and three counts of wire fraud against investors. She received an 11-year, three-month prison sentence that November.

Fielder’s film explored the tension between Holmes’s self-perception and public reckoning, using Seyfried’s participation to blur lines between dramatization, documentary restaging, and genuine encounter. The actress’s documented uncertainty about her own complicity in Holmes’s public image became, for detractors, evidence of performative ethics—and for defenders, rare accountability from a Hollywood figure.

Seyfried’s representative did not respond to requests for comment on the viewer reaction.

Holmes remains incarcerated at Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas, with her earliest possible release date still years away.
