Shannon Elizabeth alleges Harvey Weinstein threatened to end her career during her Miramax years.
Elizabeth, 52, made the claim in a new interview with Variety tied to the 25th anniversary of American Pie, the 1999 teen comedy that launched her to stardom as Czech exchange student Nadia. The role turned her into one of the era’s most recognizable young actresses and led to a three-picture deal with Miramax, the studio run by Harvey and Bob Weinstein.
Elizabeth said her manager and then-husband Joseph D. Reitman were instrumental in shielding her from potentially dangerous situations with the producer. “We did have some run-ins with Harvey, but my manager and my ex, Joe, were both very protective of me,” she told the outlet. “So, when occasions arose that could have gone very wrong, they didn’t allow it to happen. If I was invited to meet Harvey somewhere, they would say no.”
The tension escalated beyond uncomfortable professional encounters, according to Elizabeth. “Harvey did threaten my career,” she alleged, claiming Weinstein told her representation something to the effect of: “Lose my number. Don’t ever call me again about her or I’ll end her career.”
The actress believes the fallout affected her trajectory in multiple ways. Her three-picture Miramax deal ended after just two films, and she was never invited back to the Scary Movie franchise following her appearance in the 2000 original alongside Regina Hall and Anna Faris. “I think there’s a definite reason they didn’t [bring me back],” she said.
The deterioration in Elizabeth’s relationship with Weinstein also stemmed from a disagreement over whether she would pose for a men’s magazine while promoting Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the 2001 Kevin Smith comedy that was one of her two Miramax releases.
In the viral moment that defined Elizabeth’s early career, American Pie became a global phenomenon, grossing more than $235 million against an $11 million budget and cementing its place as one of the defining teen comedies of the late 1990s. The film’s success spawned multiple sequels and made Elizabeth an international name, though she has since distanced herself from Hollywood.
The actress relocated to South Africa in 2016 and founded the Shannon Elizabeth Foundation, focusing on wildlife conservation and anti-poaching efforts. She has cared for a blind black rhino and worked to expand sanctuary operations. Despite her move away from acting, Elizabeth has maintained that American Pie changed everything for her professionally. “Everything that I’ve done in my life is because of American Pie,” she told Entertainment Tonight in a separate interview.
Weinstein, now 73, has faced accusations from more than 80 women and denied allegations of non-consensual sex. He was convicted in California of rape and sexual assault and sentenced to 16 years in prison. His 2020 New York conviction was overturned in 2024 after the state’s highest court ruled he had not received a fair trial, though he remained incarcerated due to the separate California sentence. A retrial in Manhattan is ongoing.
Elizabeth’s claims add to the extensive record of allegations that Weinstein used his industry power to punish women who resisted his demands or declined his advances.
