America’s 10 most philanthropic billionaires unveiled, and Elon Musk is notably absent

The list of the most philanthropic billionaires in the United States has been unveiled, and some of the names might surprise you.

Approximately one-third of the world’s billionaires are based in the US. According to Fortune, last year, the country boasted 900 billionaires, and their collective wealth increased by 18 percent in 2025.

When considering American billionaires, names like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg often come to mind. However, where do they stand on Forbes’ new ranking of the most philanthropic billionaires in America?

Interestingly, Musk did not secure a spot in the top 10 most generous billionaires. He was also absent from Forbes’ top 25 list.

According to the publication’s analysis, Musk, with a net worth of $780 billion, is believed to have donated $500 million throughout his lifetime, which is only 0.06 percent of his total net worth.

The data was current as of January 16. As of February 16, Musk’s net worth is reported to be nearly $850 billion, maintaining his status as the world’s wealthiest individual.

If Musk isn’t among the top 10 most generous billionaires in America, who is?

According to Forbes, the following individuals have donated significant portions of their net worth:

10) Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos

9) Sergey Brin

8) Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan

7) Steve and Connie Ballmer

6) Marilyn Simons and family

5) George Soros

4) Michael Bloomberg

3) MacKenzie Scott

2) Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates

1) Warren Buffett

Warren Buffett, famed for his investment acumen, has long pledged to donate 99 percent of his wealth.

At 95, he has already given away over $68 billion, with $6.3 billion donated last year alone, amounting to 32 percent of his net worth.

Buffett has explained why he doesn’t plan to leave his fortune to his three children.

In a 2024 letter, Buffett stated (as reported by CNBC): “I’ve never wished to create a dynasty or pursue any plan that extended beyond the children.

“I know the three well and trust them completely. Future generations are another matter. Who can foresee the priorities, intelligence, and fidelity of successive generations to deal with the distribution of extraordinary wealth amid what may be a far different philanthropic landscape?”

Given that Buffett’s vast wealth might outlast his children, he has appointed three trustees to manage his assets if his children, Susie, Howie, and Peter, cannot do so before their passing.
