Amy Bradley’s former girlfriend has expressed her views on a prominent theory regarding the 23-year-old’s mysterious disappearance.
Amy vanished from a Royal Caribbean cruise near Curaçao on March 24, 1998.
This Virginia resident was on vacation with her mother Iva, father Ron, and brother Brad. She was last seen in the early morning hours on the balcony of her cabin.
Despite comprehensive searches, Amy was never located and was declared legally deceased in 2010. Her parents continue to hold hope that she may still be alive.
The Netflix documentary series, “Amy Bradley is Missing,” delves into this perplexing case, exploring theories including the possibility of her being trafficked.
In 2005, a photo surfaced on a sex worker website showing a woman who bore a striking resemblance to Amy.
The photograph highlighted a significant detail—the woman’s posture concealed tattoos on her shoulders, back, and ankle that could have been used to identify Amy.
Director Ari Mark shared with The Hollywood Reporter that the obscured identifying features left him puzzled.
Although many believe trafficking could explain Amy’s disappearance, not everyone concurs, including Amy’s former girlfriend, Kat Lovelace.
Kat, who met Amy at Longwood University in 1994, appeared in the Netflix series and joined journalist James Renner on his podcast, “True Crime This Week.”
When questioned about any surprises in the documentary, Kat mentioned the FBI’s belief that the woman in the sex worker photos was Amy.
Asked if the documentary convinced her that the photos depicted Amy, Kat replied: “No.”
Pressed further on her belief regarding the woman’s identity, she stated: “I don’t claim to know what happened to Amy 27 years ago. I have my own personal feelings about what I think may or may not have happened.”
She added: “There are some likenesses, absolutely. But there’s a part of me that thinks that’s not her. There’s a there’s a big part of me that hopes it’s not her.”
James agreed that the trafficking theory would be a ‘tragic’ possibility.
He noted his extensive research revealed ‘there’s not one confirmed case of a white woman being abducted and then trafficked in the Caribbean,’ making Amy’s case unprecedented if true.
Kat mentioned hearing the ‘same theory’ during her interviews for the Netflix documentary.
“Whether they said that out loud or not… I’m sure they collected hours and hours and hours of information and could only put so much in in the series,” she said.
“But that was one of the things, when they were talking, that they they said as well,” she said, referring to the show’s creators.
Some details, such as Amy’s family being deceived by a fraudulent private investigator, were omitted from the series.
Amy’s brother Brad commented on Twitter last week that the Netflix show ‘was not a complete account and left out quite a bit of information’.
However, Brad acknowledged that the comprehensive nature of the story ‘would have required 10 seasons to tell it all’. Considering that “Amy Bradley is Missing” consists of only three episodes, he expressed satisfaction with the producers’ work and the positive response so far.
“Amy Bradley is Missing” is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
