Andy Reid Fires Back at Travis Kelce Dad Bod Rumors

Andy Reid has pushed back on social media claims that Travis Kelce reported to Kansas City Chiefs training camp looking out of shape.

Talk about the veteran tight end’s conditioning spread quickly online after fan-recorded clips and AI-manipulated videos from the Chiefs’ camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, led to jokes about Kelce’s appearance following his July wedding to Taylor Swift. Multiple fake images circulated on social media during the first week of training camp, with some AI-altered videos showing Kelce with what was described as a “beer gut.”

During an appearance on NFL Network, the Chiefs head coach addressed the speculation directly and made it clear he has no concerns about Kelce as the 36-year-old gets ready for his 14th NFL season.

“He came back in good shape,” Reid said during his interview. “I know everybody’s out there saying he’s got the ‘dad bod’ and all this stuff, but he looks the same to me as he’s always looked, and he’s just playing like crazy. “

“He’s doing a nice job with everything—focused in and ready to go—and I appreciate that.”

Reid even joked about Kelce’s offseason conditioning, suggesting the tight end stayed in shape through activity at his wedding. “He stayed in shape. He did a lot of dancing at his wedding,” the veteran coach said with a laugh.

The speculation was further undermined when Jesse Newell, the Kansas City Chiefs beat reporter for The Athletic, posted an actual photo of Kelce at practice on August 3, showing him in considerably better shape than the AI-manipulated images that had circulated on social media.

Reid also highlighted the standard Kelce continues to set inside the team building, stressing that his competitive edge still has a major influence on the rest of the squad.

“When you have somebody who has been here 14 years and wants to be out there for every snap, he’s wired to play hard, play aggressive, and not be stopped,” Reid added. “That kind of attitude is contagious.”

The conversation around Kelce’s physique arrives after a particularly busy offseason for the multiple-time All-Pro, whose marriage to Swift brought even more public attention to his life away from football. The timing also comes as the Chiefs look to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 season in which they finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

Even with that spotlight, those inside the organization appear convinced that Kelce has returned locked in on another title push.

The debate also comes at a time when many around the league believe Kelce could be heading into the final chapter of his playing career after spending more than a decade as one of the NFL’s most recognizable stars. Hall of Famer Cris Carter fueled retirement speculation in early July when he posted a photo with Kelce and referenced his “final” season with the reference to a “last dance.”

Kelce has not confirmed whether this season will be his last, but he has previously spoken openly about how he views retirement and how long he wants to keep playing. After the 2025 season ended, the Chiefs indicated there was ongoing “communication” between Reid and Kelce about his future with the team.

Earlier, the future Hall of Famer said he intended to stay in the game “until the wheels came off” and until his body no longer allowed him to continue safely.

Still, he has also acknowledged how difficult it can be to weigh that decision as the physical demands of the sport add up over time.

“I’ve been putting my body through the wringer for the love of it… It’s a tough thing to navigate, but right now it’s just finding that answer when it all settles down.”

Beyond football, Kelce has made no secret of his plans for life after the NFL.

He has repeatedly discussed growing his presence in media through New Heights, taking on more television work, and building entertainment and business opportunities with his wife.
