Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s son Maddox has joined his siblings in choosing to leave his dad’s surname out of his professional credits.
The 24-year-old, who works as an actor and assistant director, is one of the six children Jolie shares with Pitt.
Jolie and Pitt first publicly confirmed their relationship in 2006, following speculation that the pair grew close while Pitt was still married to Friends actor Jennifer Aniston. Jolie has denied allegations of an affair.
The couple—widely dubbed “Brangelina” by the media—married in 2014 after a two-year engagement, before announcing their split in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences.
Jolie adopted Maddox from Cambodia in 2002, during her marriage to her second husband, Fargo star Billy Bob Thornton.
Pitt later adopted Maddox and Jolie’s adopted daughter Zahara in 2006, and the children’s surname was legally changed from Jolie to Jolie-Pitt.

In 2022, Jolie alleged Pitt was abusive in connection with a legal dispute involving their French winery. According to Jolie, Pitt grabbed her by the head, shook her, and pushed her into a bathroom wall, and is further accused of choking one child and striking another in the face.
The FBI reviewed the incident at the time, but ultimately chose not to pursue charges.
Pitt’s lawyer Anne Kiley responded in a statement: “Brad has owned everything he’s responsible for from day one – unlike the other side – but he’s not going to own anything he didn’t do.
“He has been on the receiving end of every type of personal attack and misrepresentation.

“Thankfully, the various public authorities the other side has tried to use against him over the past six years have made their own independent decisions.”
Maddox now appears to be the first of the former couple’s three sons to omit “Pitt” from his last name professionally. In recent years, daughters Zahara, Shiloh, and Vivienne have also dropped their father’s surname. Jolie and Pitt also share Pax, 22, and Knox, 17.
The change became noticeable when Maddox was credited as “Maddox Jolie” in production notes for Jolie’s latest film Couture, which was presented at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025.
With the film’s release in French cinemas, his name has again been listed as Maddox Jolie.

Maddox worked as an assistant director on the project, in which Jolie plays Maxine Walker—an American film director who is diagnosed with breast cancer as she arrives in France to produce editorial content for a fictional Paris fashion show.
This is a shift from his prior screen-credit listing for Jolie’s 2024 film Maria, a Maria Callas biopic directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight.
On that Oscar-nominated film, Maddox served as a production assistant and was credited as Maddox Jolie-Pitt. As Hello! reports, it remains unclear whether he has legally changed his name.
Jolie is also set to appear next in the comedy Anxious People, featuring an ensemble cast that includes The White Lotus’ Aimee Lou Wood, Shrinking actor Jason Segel, Carol Kane, Stephanie Allynne, Joanna Scanlan, Lennie James, and Jessica Gunning. The film adapts Fredrik Backman’s 2019 novel of the same name.
