Anne Hathaway recently shared insights into her experiences working in Hollywood during the early 2000s, highlighting some of the challenging practices she faced.
It’s hard to believe that Hathaway, now 42, made her feature film debut with The Princess Diaries 23 years ago.
The success of the 2001 film opened doors for her to participate in 16 additional films throughout that decade, such as Ella Enchanted, Brokeback Mountain, and Bride Wars.
Despite her increasing success on screen, Hathaway’s experiences behind the scenes were reportedly not as glamorous.
The star of Mothers’ Instinct disclosed that she was involved in ‘gross’ chemistry tests with co-stars to determine their compatibility before filming began.
Appearing alongside actors like Chris Pine, Chris Pratt, and Steve Carell, it is assumed that these chemistry tests involved them as well.
“Back in the 2000s – and this did happen to me – it was considered normal to ask an actor to make out with other actors to test for chemistry, which is actually the worst way to do it,” the 41-year-old recently shared with V Magazine.
“I was told, ‘We have 10 guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?’ and I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross.”
Hathaway explained that she was acutely aware of how easily she could be labeled ‘difficult’ and thus pretended to be enthusiastic about these kissing sessions.
“It wasn’t a power play, no one was trying to be awful or hurt me,” the Devil Wears Prada actress added. “It was just a very different time and now we know better.”
In addition to being featured on this month’s V Magazine cover, she recently appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine.
During her interview with Vanity Fair, Hathaway revisited some of her past films and was moved to tears while watching The Princess Diaries.
“This was the film that changed my life,” Hathaway remarked about the 2001 Disney hit. “It’s so weird to watch it. I haven’t seen this movie in nearly 20 years.”
She expressed that she was ‘speechless’ upon watching it and was thankful for the opportunity to be “that girl right there.”
According to IMDB, Hathaway is currently involved in seven entertainment projects.
These projects include The Princess Diaries 3, a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, an untitled collaboration with Christopher Nolan, and James Gray’s Paper Tiger.
