Anne Hathaway has responded to online claims that she is pretending to be pregnant after appearing on a red carpet in a midriff-baring look over the weekend.
The actress, 43, attended the California premiere of her new movie The End of Oak Street on Sunday, August 9, wearing a custom Atelier Prabal Gurung high-neck crop top in ice blue silk with a cascading train, low-rise denim jeans, and red heels. The film is scheduled to reach theaters on August 14.
In an Instagram video showing her preparations and arrival at the event, Hathaway addressed the chatter directly by captioning the post “Fake hair, real bump” and joking that her outfit had “literally” melted in the heat.
The reaction followed comments from some social media users who fixated on the shape of her bump, with one person on X saying it looked “so perfectly round and photo ready”. Another wrote, “Nothing screams real pregnancy like a bump so perfectly round and photo ready it looks straight off the Amazon ‘silicone baby bump 6 8 months’ listing. Hollywood’s props department really outdid themselves this time.”
Others quickly came to her defense, with one user arguing that “pregnancy bumps aren’t supposed to look identical” and adding that Hathaway “looks amazing”.
Hathaway announced in June that she is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, posting a video of herself holding her bump and captioning it “Baby I’m yours”. The couple already share two sons, Jonathan, 10, and Jack, 6. When she appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers on July 13, Hathaway said the pregnancy was unexpected and that she and Shulman were “calling this one our buzzer-beater,” comparing it to a last-second basketball shot.
The star has also spoken openly in the past about the more difficult parts of her journey to motherhood. In a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed that she had suffered a miscarriage years earlier while performing in an off-Broadway production, saying “the first time it didn’t work out for me.” She said that after a later pregnancy progressed successfully, she felt a responsibility to connect with other women who had experienced loss and let them know “you don’t have to always be graceful”, as well as, “I see you and I’ve been you.”
The premiere comes during what has been described as one of the busiest years of Hathaway’s career. Her 2026 release slate includes The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mother Mary, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, The End of Oak Street, and Verity, with five films releasing in 2026 alone.
Earlier this month, Hathaway told People that motherhood has shaped her style choices. “I love that being a boy mom has really informed my fashion,” she said.
She added, “I have to always be able to go from a serious business meeting to, like, a basketball court. You have to be able to play pickup basketball at any point, in any outfit. So [I tell myself]: When you get dressed in the morning, dress wisely because you 100 percent are going to have a projectile thrown at you probably by the end of breakfast,” she added.
