Anthony Joshua reportedly considering ‘boxing retirement’ after tragic car accident claims lives of two friends

Anthony Joshua’s family has indicated that the former heavyweight champion has ‘retired from boxing’.

Last Monday (December 29), the 36-year-old was involved in a serious car accident in Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of two crucial members of his boxing team – his strength coach, Sina Ghami, and his personal trainer, Latif Ayodele.

The British boxer was a passenger in a Lexus Jeep that crashed into a stationary truck on a highway in Ogun State near Lagos. The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with multiple offenses.

The 46-year-old driver faced the Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday, where he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license.

Joshua was released from the hospital just a few days after the crash and returned to London over the weekend to attend the funerals of Ghami and Ayodele, which were held in a mosque in the city on Sunday.

Even though Joshua sustained only minor injuries in the accident, his uncle Adedamola Joshua has told Nigerian boxing outlet, The Punch, that his nephew intends to retire from the sport.
