Anya Taylor-Joy Reveals How She Found Out the World Cup Score at Taylor Swift’s Phone-Free Wedding

Anya Taylor-Joy has shared the surprising way she found out Argentina had secured a major World Cup victory while she was attending a phone-free wedding.

The British-Argentine actor, 30, was among the guests at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Friday, July 3.

On the same evening, Argentina defeated Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The game took place at Miami Stadium in Florida.

Because guests were not allowed to use their phones during the celebration, Taylor-Joy had no direct way to keep up with the match. She only learned the outcome when a waiter approached her during the event and quietly shared the update.

Her comments came while she was promoting Lucky, Apple TV+’s new limited crime drama, in which she plays a con artist forced to reckon with the fallout from a high-stakes heist. The series, which also stars Timothy Olyphant and was developed from Marissa Stapley’s 2021 novel, marks another major TV role for Taylor-Joy after The Queen’s Gambit.

While promoting her new Apple TV crime drama Lucky, Taylor-Joy appeared on LADbible’s Swipe Stuff, a quick-reaction interview format, where she spoke about missing Lionel Messi’s moment in the game.

She said a member of staff at the wedding made sure she still got the news.

“I was actually in a phone-free event recently, and somebody that was working the tables, a waiter, came up to me and was like, ‘Just so you know, Argentina’s just won,'” Taylor-Joy said. “Then I was like, ‘Yes!'”

She also praised the Argentine star’s role in the result, saying, “So, thank you, Messi! Thank you for making our country so proud.”

Taylor-Joy was one of many high-profile guests at the ceremony. She was seen posing with Kesha, with both wearing coordinated black gowns for the occasion.

Reports said around 1,000 people attended the wedding, including Ed Sheeran, Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez, Sabrina Carpenter, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Bradley Cooper and Dakota Johnson.

Adam Sandler reportedly officiated, while Stevie Nicks and Paul McCartney were among the performers during the reception, helping make the event one of the most celebrity-packed weddings in recent memory.

For Taylor-Joy, the night brought together two big occasions at once: celebrating close friends on an important day while also anxiously waiting to hear how Argentina had fared in the tournament.

Her response made it clear the result was weighing on her mind even with the wedding’s strict no-phone rule in place.

Lucky, which Taylor-Joy was promoting during the interview, is now available to stream on Apple TV. The first two episodes have already been released, with new installments arriving every Wednesday through August 19.
