It brought a sour finish to what many had hoped would be a memorable final tournament for 39-year-old captain Lionel Messi, who had led Argentina deep into the competition once again.
Messi, however, cut a very different figure from some of his teammates, taking time after the game to shake hands with the Spain players and offer his congratulations.
