Artist Uses Her Own Period Blood To Create Unexpectedly Beautiful Photographs

Artist Jen Lewis chooses an interesting medium to create her art. Can you guess what it is?

There’s only one thing that’s as deep and red as this: menstrual blood.

Lewis, a self-titled  “menstrual designer,” is on a mission to break the taboo around menstruation.

Most people are no stranger to gory horror films and won’t flinch at the sight of blood. But while society has no problem seeing buckets of blood thrown around in a movie, it has a different opinion when it’s coming out of a vagina.

Lewis’ art project, “Beauty in Blood”, explores the fluidity, patterns, and unexpected beauty of every woman’s monthly cycle.

Lewis hopes that her art will help “normalize the menstruation process.”

She had the idea after she started using a menstrual cup and noticed the flow of her blood. “I got really interested in the abstract qualities,” Lewis said.

“I noticed the blood has a lot of similarities to paint.”

She creates the photographs with her husband, Rob. They took the first images in their bathroom, then later switched to creating them in a fish tank.

According to Lewis, her art is: “beyond communicating a singular message. My hope is to stimulate these conversations and get people speaking openly about all the issues related to menstruation… I hope ‘Beauty in Blood’ communicates that menstruation is nothing to be ashamed of or fear.”

We couldn’t agree more.
