Ashton Kutcher recently opened up about his career during a conversation with fans, shedding light on a surprising downside of being considered attractive.
In the world of acting, looks can significantly influence casting decisions, as it’s a visual medium where appearance can impact audience perception.
While Hollywood is undeniably about looks to some degree, Ashton Kutcher acknowledged that his physical appearance has sometimes been a barrier to landing certain roles he desired.
However, Kutcher is fully aware that his looks have also opened doors for him in the industry.
On October 11, he took the stage at the New York Comic Con to talk about a new project he’s involved in.
He remarked, “And so, there are roles that I’ve gotten because of the way I look and there are roles that I haven’t gotten because of the way I look. Sometimes it’s frustrating.”
Kutcher noted that his appearance has caused him to miss out on more serious roles where the character is depicted as ‘down on their luck.’
In discussing his role in the forthcoming TV series The Beauty, slated for a 2026 release, he highlighted how his understanding of casting decisions has evolved.
He explained, “You’re trying to tell a story with pictures, and the pictures need to create a feeling for the audience.”
The upcoming Hulu series explores a sexually transmitted disease that makes people ‘beautiful’ but ultimately leads to their demise. The storyline involves characters attempting to unravel the mystery behind the disease while becoming entangled in a dark government conspiracy.
Discussing his role, Kutcher shared, “Without giving away too much, almost every one of us has an incredibly nuanced role where, in some way, shape or form, we’re playing something that we are or we aren’t at any given time.
“It creates this underlying ability to embody insecurities that you may have, that you hide away and you push down, and you don’t let anyone in the world see it.”
He expressed that participating in this series is ‘one of the great delights’ of his acting career.
The show is scheduled to premiere on Hulu in 2026.
