A resurfaced video highlights an uncomfortable incident where Selena Gomez had to present an award to a rapper who had previously tweeted ‘disgusting’ remarks about her.
The footage, from the 2011 MTV EMAs, captures Gomez, now 32, announcing the Best New Artist honor to Tyler the Creator, alongside Taylor Lautner from Twilight.
Fans noticed the tension in the air, given the rapper’s past ‘disgusting’ comments about Gomez, who was approximately 18 years old then and in a relationship with Justin Bieber.
One user shared the nostalgic video online, commenting: “Never forget when Selena Gomez had to present Tyler the Creator the best new artist award at the 2011 EMAs after the disgusting things he openly tweeted about her.”
The tweets, now deleted, included several sexually explicit remarks, one of which stated: “Selena Gomez, I am going to f**k the s**t out of you.”
Tyler later addressed these tweets in his song ‘Manifesto’, expressing that he ‘didn’t wanna offend her’ and mentioned having ‘apologised’ to Gomez when he met her.
The lyrics go: “I was cancelled before cancelled was with Twitter fingers (Haha)/Protestin’ outside my shows, I gave them the middle finger (f**k ’em) / I was a teener, tweetin’ Selena crazy s**t / Didn’t wanna offend her, apologize when I seen her / Back when I was tryna f**k Bieber, Just-in.”
In 2013, Tyler mentioned that he and Gomez ‘don’t get along’, telling Power106 FM: “We don’t like each other ‘cause I’m kicking it with Justin, like that’s my homeboy.
“She always be mean muggin’ me. Like why are you hating on me.”
Reflecting on the scenario, fans were shocked, with one commenting on X: “I would’ve refused to say his name she’s better then me.”
Another remarked: “That was definitely an awkward moment – Selena handled it with a lot of grace given the circumstances.”
A third fan noted: “Selena handled that moment with true professionalism despite everything Tyler had said.”
A fourth fan recalled: “That was definitely a memorable moment! Selena Gomez handled it with a lot of grace, especially considering the tweets Tyler, the Creator had made about her.
“The tension was palpable, but she managed to keep things professional on stage despite the awkwardness.
“It highlighted how complex celebrity interactions can be, especially when past comments come back into play.”
