Danish pop act Aqua have confirmed they’re stepping away from performing live, nearly 30 years after shooting to worldwide fame with their playful hit ‘Barbie Girl’.
The group shared the announcement on Instagram on Monday, bringing a close to a chapter that’s lasted close to three decades.
“After many incredible years, we have decided to close the chapter of AQUA as a live band,” they wrote. “AQUA has been such a huge part of our lives, and together we’ve had the chance to experience more than we ever dared to dream of.”
“When you’ve been together for this long, you also learn when it’s time to protect what you’ve created together. For us, this feels like the right moment to say goodbye, while the memories are still strong, and while the love for the music, the story, and each other remains intact.”
They wrapped up by expressing gratitude to supporters who’ve followed them over the years, signing off with “nothing but love and gratitude.”

Aqua originally formed in 1994 with four members: Søren Rasted, Lene Nystrøm, René Dif and Claus Norreen.
That lineup remained intact for the next 22 years, until Norreen left the band in 2016.
Although they’re most closely associated with 1997’s ‘Barbie Girl’, the band notched up several other standout singalongs, including ‘Doctor Jones’, ‘Turn Back Time’ and ‘Cartoon Heroes.’
Their music and bright, humorous visuals made them a staple for many fans, but the jokey approach didn’t land with everyone. Mattel, the company behind Barbie, notably filed a lawsuit against the group in 2000.
Mattel argued that parts of ‘Barbie Girl’ harmed the doll’s image, pointing to lyrics including: “I’m a blonde bimbo girl in a fantasy world / Dress me up, make it tight, I’m your dolly.”
The case was dismissed in 2002. Aqua later partnered with Mattel on a Barbie-related commercial, though the version used altered, more family-friendly lyrics.
In 2023, Mattel also approved the song’s inclusion in Greta Gerwig’s live-action Barbie film. The original track was additionally sampled and reworked for the movie’s soundtrack through a collaboration with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice, resulting in “Barbie World”
While the decision is likely to disappoint devoted europop listeners, it isn’t the first time Aqua have called time on the group. They previously split in 2001 before reuniting in 2007.
