It has come to light that Gene Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, made a poignant purchase on Amazon shortly before her death in February.
Arakawa, a classical pianist who shared more than three decades of marriage with Hackman, was discovered deceased at their New Mexico residence on February 26.
Upon the arrival of authorities, it was found that Hackman had also died in a different part of their home, along with one of the couple’s dogs.
An investigation followed, revealing that Hackman and Arakawa died at separate times.
Arakawa is believed to have passed away around February 12, while Hackman, known for his role in Behind Enemy Lines, is estimated to have died on February 18.
The investigation further clarified the causes of death, which were different for each of them.
Hackman’s death was attributed to severe heart disease, with Alzheimer’s being a contributing factor. Arakawa’s death was caused by hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a rare disease associated with rodents.
This illness, which has been reported in the U.S. in recent months, can begin with flu-like symptoms and potentially escalate to a serious lung condition.
On February 11, Arakawa ordered oxygen canisters from Amazon, which officials believe were intended as ‘respiratory support’ for either herself or Hackman.
The day before, on February 10, Arakawa conducted online searches for questions like ‘can Covid cause dizziness?’ and ‘flu and nosebleeds’.
In addition, it is believed she called her massage therapist to cancel an appointment, citing Hackman’s ‘flu/cold-like symptoms’, although he had tested negative for Covid-19.
Officials have also disclosed numerous documents and photographs of affectionate notes exchanged between Hackman and Arakawa.
One particularly touching note shows Hackman expressing regret for requiring Arakawa’s assistance with her own birthday arrangements.
The note stated: “Good morning. Happy several days after your birthday. Sorry still about the dinner and having to ask for your help, although it was appreciated. Love you and the guys, G.”
Arakawa acted as a caregiver for Hackman, who seemed to be conscious of his health condition.
“Ho, Ho, I am off to see the Wizard, the Wizz of Achie, Pokie. She stabs me here and stabs me there, she stabs me almost everywhere (almost),” he mentioned in one note.
“But I survive because after [sic] I am still alive. (But some times just barely).”
