Kunal Nayyar makes a brief appearance in the new Big Bang Theory spin-off, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and the transformation is striking enough that some fans may not recognize him at first glance.
The HBO Max series, which premiered on July 23, 2026, follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman, after he accidentally triggers a multiverse disaster with a device built by Sheldon and Leonard. It marks the latest expansion of the long-running franchise after the original CBS sitcom and Young Sheldon.
Nayyar became widely known for playing Raj Koothrappali in the long-running CBS sitcom, a role he held throughout the show’s original run. Away from that series, he has also featured in projects including Criminal: UK, Sanjay and Craig, and the 2016 movie Trolls.
Even so, viewers used to his usual on-screen look may be surprised by how different he appears in the new series.
The HBO comedy shifts the focus to comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman, as he gets pulled into a multiverse-spanning mission to stop a catastrophe on a massive scale.
Alongside Stuart are several familiar supporting characters, including his former partner Denise, played by Lauren Lapkus, and fellow scientists Bert and Barry Kripke, played by Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie. While the spin-off centers on a different corner of the franchise, it still leaves room for well-known faces from the original show. Spoilers follow for the first episode.
The opening episode, called ‘Spoiler: Gary Dies’, arrived yesterday (July 23) and drops audiences into a ruined world overrun by flesh-eating moths. Despite the devastation, Stuart continues operating his comic book shop, even if business in the apocalypse is about what you’d expect.
Things escalate when Stuart encounters another version of himself from a different dimension. That alternate Stuart warns him about a threat to the multiverse and pushes him to track down a mysterious device.
Later, when the group reaches a deserted Caltech Institute of Technology, they are captured by another-universe Barry and taken to see Raj. This version of Raj looks far removed from the one fans remember, with long hair, a beard, and a far rougher appearance as he tries to repair the quantum interference device.
The team eventually manages to get away by putting Bert’s geology knowledge to use and creating makeshift rock bombs. Nayyar’s cameo is not the only nod to the original sitcom either, as the series has already hinted that more returning faces could be on the way.
In an interview with People, Lauren Lapkus suggested fans should keep watching for more surprises.
“There’s also lots of Easter eggs and cameos and guest stars and things that they’ll be very excited about.”
She also spoke positively about Nayyar’s appearance in the series.

The premiere also reveals that Leonard Hofstadter, Sheldon Cooper, and Howard Wolowitz were behind the quantum interference device that destabilized reality in the first place.
That has naturally fueled speculation that Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, and Simon Helberg could also show up later on. Co-creator Bill Prady added to that possibility during a San Diego Comic-Con panel earlier this month, via RadioTimes.
“Well, you saw one wonderful member of the Big Bang Theory family in that first episode. There are more, and there are also some performers who are some wonderful minor characters that are coming back.”
