The Met Gala is no stranger to bold and unconventional fashion, but Blackpink’s Lisa’s choice of attire has sparked some debate.
Lisa, known for her role as a member of the K-POP sensation Blackpink and her appearance in the third season of White Lotus, made her first Met Gala appearance dressed in a Louis Vuitton creation.
Her fellow bandmate, Jennie, also made her debut at the event, wearing an elegant Chanel ensemble.
This year’s theme was centered around “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” highlighting fashion that celebrates Black culture and dandyism.
Lisa’s outfit adhered to the theme, as the 28-year-old actress from White Lotus arrived in a black lace tailored jacket layered over a lace bodice, paired with Louis Vuitton tights, black court heels, and a Louis Vuitton handbag.
However, the lace details on her outfit drew attention as it appears to feature images of historical Black figures like Rosa Parks and Maya Angelou.
In a statement about the creation of Lisa’s outfit, Louis Vuitton explained, “The lace replicates elements of an artwork by the American artist Henry Taylor depicting portraits of figures who have been a part of the artist’s life,” according to The New York Times.
These lace details extended to the undergarments, placing the historical figures in a potentially compromising position.
Lisa, whose full name is Lalisa Manobal, has faced criticism for what some consider a disrespectful fashion choice.

One Twitter user expressed their disapproval, saying, “I’m sorry but like isn’t having Rosa Parks, a huge historical figure, on your panties…like you know disrespectful, it’s also weird.”
Another questioned, “Who the hell decided it was a good idea to put the faces of influential black women on a pair of PANTIES.”
A third voiced their concern with, “Rosa Park on her underwear. This is so disrespectful wtf was she thinking.”
Despite the criticism, there were those who praised Lisa’s custom outfit. Someone commented on the intricate design, saying, “The faces on the outfits kinda screammm how the detailing is soooooo on top of its games! Super cool @LouisVuitton.”
Another admirer wrote, “Maya Angelou was an American poet, writer, and civil rights activist, best known for her memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. A powerful voice for Black identity, women’s rights, and equality — her portrait is beautifully embroidered on Lisa’s Met Gala outfit.”
A different supporter remarked, “Lisa’s Met Gala outfit features the silhouettes of many Black icons! Her team did an amazing job.”
Another person simply stated, “This look is EVERYTHING.”
