Body language expert shares meaning behind Trump and King Charles’ hand gestures as state visit underway

A body language expert has claimed that the King is ‘genuinely happy’ to be in US, and is ‘confident’ with POTUS Donald Trump as he arrives for his four-day state visit.

King Charles has landed in the United States alongside Queen Camilla, following a turbulent few days in the country after the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ dinner over the weekend.

The monarch’s four-day trip is intended to commemorate 250 years since the United States declared independence from Britain.

Shortly after arriving, Trump was accused of breaching royal etiquette by tapping King Charles on the shoulder, which many consider a clear protocol misstep.

Despite that, the rest of the interaction appeared calm and cordial, according to a body language specialist who reviewed footage of the pair.

Looking at video of King Charles and Queen Camilla arriving in the US, Darren, speaking on behalf of Betfair Casino, said in regards to the meeting: “The King and Trump share several open hand gestures, which is significant. There are no signs of power moves here. There are no overbearing gestures.”

He added that both the King and Camilla appeared ‘confident’, emphasising that the King did not look ‘intimidated’ by President Donald Trump.

“It felt like an equal affair in terms of the balance of power. There were no signs of mind games. There were no microexpressions of anything that wasn’t open and honest.”

Turning to First Lady Melania Trump, Darren noted she ‘can often put on a fake smile,’ but suggested that on this occasion it looked authentic, saying she seemed ‘genuinely happy’ to welcome them.

Darren also reviewed footage of the King and Queen as they came down from the plane after touching down in the US, and said the ‘confident’ King showed no signs of ‘nervousness’ — something he contrasted with earlier overseas appearances.

“Camilla also looks very confident. They both have their hands by their sides. In previous years we’ve seen the King playing with his cufflinks or tucking his hands inside his jacket, which are self-soothing gestures – but there was none of this today,” Darren added.

Body language expert Darren says the King is “genuinely happy” to be visiting America, based on his body language.

After arriving at the White House yesterday, the King and Queen are due to take part in a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office today, before being formally received again by US troops.

They will then deliver an address to Congress in a joint session — only the second time a British monarch has done so.
