Brazilian Nurse Dies From Shrimp Allergy During Portugal Honeymoon

Tiago Nascimento is mourning his wife after she died during their honeymoon in Portugal.

Amanda Nascimento, 29, a Brazilian intensive care nurse, suffered a fatal allergic reaction to shrimp last Wednesday in the central Portuguese city of Leiria, her husband told Brazilian newspaper Metropoles. The couple had married just 11 days earlier, on Oct. 10, and were nearing the end of a European trip that had already taken them to the Vatican.

The newlyweds went to a restaurant for lunch that afternoon, where Amanda consumed shrimp along with other seafood items, Tiago recounted. They spent the following hours walking through the city and browsing a bookstore before the reaction set in.

“She ate a little and we went for a walk around the city, we went to a bookstore,” Tiago recalled. “And then, two hours later, she had an allergic reaction, around 4:30 pm (Portugal time).”

Amanda was rushed to a Leiria area hospital, but doctors there could not provide the care she needed. She had to be transferred roughly 49 miles north to Coimbra University Hospital, yet she suffered cardiac arrest and died before reaching the facility, her husband said.

Amanda’s brother-in-law told Brazilian news outlet G1 that she was allergic to shrimp and had asked restaurant staff about the contents of her plate. According to the relative, she understood their response to mean the dish contained only fish, not shrimp.

Tiago, in a devastating social media post, marked the brief span of their marriage and the joy of their wedding day.

“We got married on October 10, and it was the happiest day of our lives –a dream come true,” Tiago wrote.

“You were as beautiful as ever. We only had 11 days as husband and wife; we were still on our honeymoon,” he added.

“We had built a life together, and I will never forget the affectionate, sweet, incredible, and humble woman you were—always so thoughtful and organized. My heart is in pieces.”

Tiago also remembered his wife as “an extraordinary person, a sweet, humble woman who always cared about everyone.”

“She loved her profession and was very Catholic,” he said. “She passed away doing what she loved most, which was traveling.”

Amanda had worked since May 2025 as a nurse in the intensive care unit at Mantevida Hospital in Federal District, Brazil. The hospital issued a statement honoring her after her death.

“Her presence, her commitment, and her humanity remain in the memory of those who knew her and those who were cared for by her,” the hospital said.

The couple had been scheduled to return to Brazil on Friday.
