Vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry have long been considered the quintessential ice cream flavors, but a surprising new entry has emerged in the market.
Earlier this year, the ice cream brand OddFellows teamed up with the parenting company Frida to introduce a ‘breast milk’ ice cream.
As reported by ABC News, this partnership was initiated to commemorate the launch of Frida’s 2-in-1 Manual Breast Pump.
In March, Frida made an announcement about the ice cream’s production. In a press release, they stated: “We’ve been obsessed with feeding babies forever. And while developing our newest pump, we dove deep into the world of breastmilk.”
They also mentioned that stories of individuals trying breast milk served as inspiration. In a related story, a 23-year-old woman recently revealed that selling her breast milk to bodybuilders has become a profitable venture, earning her over $3,500.
Now, OddFellows’ ‘breast milk’ ice cream is available to the public, but only for a limited period.
This unique frozen treat can be found until August 10 at OddFellows’ pop-up in New York City and on Frida’s website.
The primary ingredients are typical of standard ice cream, including milk, heavy cream, skim milk powder, egg yolks, and sugar.
Despite its name, the ice cream does not contain actual breast milk. Instead, it features liposomal bovine colostrum, a substance derived from cows.
Colostrum is also a component of human breast milk, and according to the Cleveland Clinic, it plays a crucial role in developing a baby’s immune system, typically forming during pregnancy.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that colostrum is rich in antibodies and nutrients.
So, what does it taste like?
The press release describes the flavor as: “Sweet, nutty and a hint of salt,” complemented by “swirled with rich, creamy fat.”
The consumption of breast milk beyond infancy has been a topic of interest before; several celebrities have admitted to trying it.
After giving birth to her and Travis Barker’s son, Rocky, Kourtney Kardashian shared on her Instagram Story in April that she drank some of her milk during breastfeeding, saying: “I just pounded a glass of breast milk because I feel sick. Goodnight!”
Additionally, Ashley Roberts of The Pussycat Dolls once confessed on Good Morning Britain that she sampled her friend’s breast milk after learning about its nutritional benefits, describing it as tasting like “sweet almond milk.”
Regarding safety, while there are some risks associated with drinking breast milk, OB-GYN Dr. Sherry Ross informed E! News that it is generally safe when properly stored and if the consumer is healthy.
“Breast milk is rich in nutrients, vitamins, and protective anti-bacterial and inflammatory properties,” she explained.
