Britney Spears checks herself into rehab for substance abuse weeks after DUI arrest

Britney Spears has reportedly checked into a rehabilitation facility in the wake of her arrest last month.

The singer was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on March 4, after officers allegedly observed her “driving erratically”.

At the time, police said Spears, 44, displayed “signs of impairment and submitted to a series of field sobriety tests” once she was pulled over.

A California Highway Patrol (CHP) spokesperson said: “At approximately 8.48pm, a black BMW 430i was reported to the CHP’s Ventura Communications Centre for driving erratically at a high rate of speed on southbound US-101 near the Borchard Road exit in Newbury Park.”

According to officers, Spears was the only person in the vehicle. She was later arrested for “driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol” and taken to the Ventura County Main Jail, northwest of Los Angeles.

She was released a few hours later. Now, weeks after the incident, Page Six reports that Spears has entered rehab for substance abuse.

A source told the outlet that the ‘Toxic’ singer made the decision herself and checked in voluntarily. It’s not known how long she intends to stay, though Rehabs.com notes that many programmes typically last 30, 60, or 90 days.

Spears is next scheduled to appear in court on May 4.

Before news of the rehab stay emerged, her representative suggested a structured approach had been needed for some time.

“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” they said. “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

The rep added: “Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

This is not the first time Spears has sought professional support. In 2019, she checked into a mental health facility for “emotional distress”.

That period reportedly followed serious health complications involving her father, Jamie Spears. A source told PEOPLE at the time: “Britney just needed to focus on herself. […] Her dad being sick has taken a toll on her.

“He nearly died and actually had another surgery a few weeks ago. He’s not doing well. They’re so close and it has been a lot. There is nothing dramatic going on with her — she just realized she needs to make sure to take time to care for herself.”
