Bruce Willis’ wife shares emotional divorce revelation following actor’s dementia diagnosis

Emma Heming Willis has shared that she contemplated ending her marriage with Bruce Willis before he received his heartbreaking dementia diagnosis.

In 2023, the family of the 70-year-old actor, known for his role in Die Hard, disclosed that he was diagnosed with frontotemporal degeneration (FTD). This came after he had retired from acting the previous year.

Frontotemporal degeneration is a less common form of dementia, affecting the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. The condition is irreversible and affects millions globally, with over 55 million people living with dementia worldwide.

Emma discussed her family life and Bruce Willis’ health during a podcast conversation with Oprah Winfrey, where she confessed to considering divorce before learning of his dementia.

Emma told Oprah, “We weren’t aligning on things we used to. Our values didn’t seem to be matching anymore.”

She candidly admitted, “100 percent thought about divorce, yes. I didn’t understand how our relationship was so connected, we were so enmeshed. And yet, all of a sudden things started falling apart.”

She further explained that their struggles went on for a few years before they both decided it was time to consult doctors.

Emma shared with Oprah, “I was just annoyed with him. I didn’t understand what was happening and the conversations we were having. We just weren’t aligned and I didn’t know why. He wasn’t raising his hand about anything, and I did contemplate divorce.”

Oprah asked whether Bruce felt the impact of his diagnosis when he received it in 2022. Emma replied, “I don’t think it landed, and I’m grateful for that.”

In an interview with ABC News, Emma revealed that Bruce moved into a separate home, away from their children Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11.

Emma expressed, “Bruce would want that for our daughters. He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.”

She emphasized that it was among the most challenging decisions the family had faced.

Bruce Willis now resides in a single-story home with full-time care due to the progressive nature of his condition.

Emma added, “When we go over, either we’re outside, or we’re watching a movie…it’s just really about being able to be there, and connect with Bruce.”

She described the home as “a house that is filled with love, and warmth, and care, and laughter.” She continued, “And it’s been beautiful to see that, to see how many of Bruce’s friends continue to show up for him, and they bring in life, and fun.”
