Jose Jesus Rodriguez, 34, has been identified as the suspect in a deadly Oakland stabbing rampage that left one person dead and four others wounded across multiple locations on Monday.
The 30-minute attack spanned Cesar Chavez Park and three other sites in East Oakland, with chilling footage showing Rodriguez, in a white tank top, approaching his first victim before suddenly stabbing her repeatedly as she tried to back away. Transportation officers later alerted city police to another stabbing near the Fruitvale BART station as the violence spread.
Rodriguez is homeless and has documented mental health issues, according to court records. He had been released on parole in 2023 after serving prison time for a 2019 stabbing spree in which he attacked an Uber driver and a garbage collector.
Following his release, Rodriguez racked up multiple parole violations and struggled to find work, KTVU reported. His alleged conduct during this period included trying to bite off a police officer’s ear and swinging a wooden board at two people.
A parole agent wrote last year that “there are no programs to appropriately address Rodriguez’s escalating behavior,” adding he “poses a significant threat to the community.”
Legal analyst Steven Clark addressed the case in a KTVU interview, connecting it to larger questions about public safety in Oakland.
“It’s understandable why the community may feel that the pendulum has swung too far in favor of the defendant instead of public safety when you see a case like this,” Clark said.
Rodriguez now faces murder and assault charges and is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.
The attacks have left some Oakland residents shaken. Moe Hassan spoke with KTVU near the site of two of the stabbings.
“That was very, very scary,” Hassan said. “We need to get a hold on it. Mental health is very strong in Oakland, and it’s like more and more every day.”

Rodriguez is expected to appear in court in Oakland.
