Canada’s Incoming Prime Minister Mark Carney Promises Victory in Trade Dispute, Criticizes Donald Trump

Mark Carney, soon to be Canada’s Prime Minister, has pledged to triumph over the current trade conflict with the United States. Following his appointment as Justin Trudeau’s successor on Sunday (March 9), he immediately took a stance against Donald Trump.

Having previously led the central banks of both the UK and Canada, Carney emerged victorious in the contest to head the Liberal Party of Canada. This makes him the first to assume the role of Prime Minister without a substantial political career.

Carney is anticipated to become Prime Minister in the near future and will spearhead the Liberal Party as they approach the next general election, which is expected to be announced soon, according to BBC News.

Upon taking on the leadership of Canada, Carney did not hesitate to criticize President Trump.

The US President enacted an order to apply ‘catastrophic’ tariffs on Canadian goods, claiming it was to hold Canada ‘accountable’ for what he described as a failure to ‘halt the flood of poisonous drugs into the US.’

A 25 percent tariff was imposed on all imports, with Canadian energy products facing an additional 10 percent tariff.

The 47th President of the United States remarked that the only ‘solution’ for Canada to avoid the tariffs would be to become the 51st state of the US.

During a speech on Sunday, Carney asserted: “America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form.

“We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves. The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country.

“Think about it. If they succeed, they will destroy our way of life.”

Carney continued: “I know these are dark days. Dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust.

“We’re getting over the shock, but let us never forget the lessons: we have to look after ourselves and we have to look out for each other. We need to pull together in the tough days ahead.”

Prime Minister Trudeau, in his farewell address on Sunday, emotionally passed the leadership to Carney.

As reported by the New York Post, Trudeau stated: “These past ten years have been challenging. Crisis after crisis has been thrown at Canadians, but through every crisis, Canadians have shown who they are. We’ve pulled together, we’ve stood up for each other and every single time we’ve emerged even stronger.

“And now, as Canadians face — from our neighbor — an existential challenge, an economic crisis, Canadians are showing exactly what we are made of.”
