Canary Island leader refuses to allow virus-hit cruise ship to dock there

The president of the Canary Islands has reportedly turned down a request for a Dutch cruise ship to dock in the region due to concerns over a suspected hantavirus outbreak onboard.

The vessel, the MV Hondius, has seen three passengers die from what is thought to be hantavirus.

A number of other people have also become ill, and two crew members were evacuated from the ship yesterday (May 5) to get urgent medical treatment.

The ship departed Argentina on April 1 and was expected to head toward the Canary Islands, but Fernando Clavijo is said to have refused permission for it to dock.
