In a recent livestream, Cardi B stirred controversy with her remarks, leaving many in the plus-size community feeling upset by what they deemed ‘unacceptable’ comments.
During the video, which was meant to be a casual chat while she ate Chick-fil-A and discussed her clothing line, Cardi B remarked on how quickly her merchandise sold out, attributing it to her fans’ size.
“What I wanted to tell y’all is that we really underestimated the box sets, so the box sets are completely sold out – especially because you fat f*cks – clearly you guys are fat as f*ck, no Chick-fil-A for y’all – the 3XL sold out like in 20 minutes,” the 32-year-old stated.
She seemed to realize the impact of her words immediately after making the comment and attempted to backtrack.
Cardi B went on to clarify: “Now I know my fans is fat I can’t even make fun of fat people no more. Don’t call me fatphobic y’all ’cause everyone made fun of my BBL [Brazilian butt lift] so don’t.
“I can body-shame people ’cause ya’ll body-shame me. If y’all body-shame me, I can body-shame y’all.
“This is a body-shaming space. You can talk about my body and I’ll talk about yours, so if I call you fat it’s not a big deal.”
The response from her audience was largely negative.
“Damn. i really liked cardi b. as a 3x wearer this is extremely disappointing and upsetting. cardi, comments like these are what normalize and embolden strangers to harass me online because of how i look. unacceptable and hateful. gross,” commented one Reddit user.
Another added: “Seeing how she talks about her fans with bodies like mine is disheartening tbh.”
Some questioned why celebrities might treat their fans harshly, pointing out that their success is due to these supporters. One person said: “Keep alienating us and see how that goes for you.”
A different individual expressed: “I got 50 seconds into the clip and stopped it. If you think of me, as your fan, as a fat f*ck, you aren’t getting my hard earned money.
“I liked a couple of her songs, aside from that she’s not my fav or anything but even if it was my favorite artist and I heard them talk that way, I’d wouldn’t spend a further dime on them.”
In response to the backlash, Cardi B took to TikTok to stand by her remarks, refusing to apologize.
“It was an innocent joke between me and my fans…it’s not that serious,” she explained.
“Especially when it comes to me, I make fun of everybody. I don’t care if you fat, skinny, BBL down, got big feet, got small feet, whatever. As long as you don’t stink, I don’t give a damn.”
“I’m not going to apologize because y’all are sensitive and wanna cry about some dumb sh*t. Every day y’all wanna cry about some dumb sh*t,” she remarked.
