Céline Dion wept onstage as she launched her first concert residency since her stiff person syndrome diagnosis.
The 58-year-old singer began her 26-date run at the Plenitude Arena in Paris on Saturday, her first full stage return since revealing the neurological disorder in December 2022. Dion, sporting a black gown with her hair in a slicked-back bun, grew visibly emotional as applause washed over her, according to fan footage shared to Instagram.
“I promised not to cry. Tonight I want to sing for you, for me, for life,” Dion told the crowd, according to CBC News.
“Finally,” she continued. “It’s amazing we’re all together. I made a promise. I made a promise to come back and be back on stage.”
The Grammy winner later changed into a glittery black jacket and black pants to deliver her 1997 ballad “My Heart Will Go On,” footage posted by the venue to Instagram showed. She also offered a heartfelt nod to her 1996 hit “Because You Loved Me,” telling fans, “If I may say so, I am everything I am because you loved me.”
Dion thanked the audience for their “support” and “patience” during the emotional evening.
The “Power of Love” singer first announced the Paris residency in March via a YouTube video released for her March 30 birthday, calling the return “the best gift of my life.”
“I’m so ready to do this,” she said in part. “I’m feeling good. I’m strong. I’m feeling excited, obviously, of course a little nervous, but most of all I am grateful to all of you. I can’t wait to see you again.”
Her preparation for the stage was extensive and multidisciplinary. Dion told Harper’s Bazaar she committed to 90-minute Pilates sessions up to three times weekly, plus two ballet classes. She also underwent physical therapy, vocal therapy and immunotherapy, and was prescribed new medications that helped enable a rare appearance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The neurological condition forced Dion to cancel her “Courage” world tour in May 2023, halting her career as she focused on treatment. She has described the battle as “one of the hardest experiences of my life.”
Still, Dion remained resolute about performing again. She said she was “determined” to return to the stage and “live as normal of a life as possible” despite the disorder’s challenges.
Stiff person syndrome is a rare autoimmune neurological disorder that causes progressive muscle stiffness and painful spasms, often triggered by environmental stimuli like noise or emotional distress. The condition can severely impair mobility and has no known cure, though treatments can help manage symptoms.
Dion’s diagnosis came after what she later revealed was 17 years of suffering undiagnosed symptoms. The progressive nature of the disorder made her return to full-scale performance uncertain, and her Olympics appearance last summer marked only her second public performance since 2020.
The Paris residency represents her most ambitious undertaking since the diagnosis, with 26 scheduled shows at the 40,000-capacity arena.
Dion’s team has not confirmed additional tour dates beyond the Paris run.
