Taylor Simone Ledward has fired back at her late husband Chadwick Boseman’s brothers in new court filings, branding their lawsuit a calculated “public-relations stunt.”
In documents filed Thursday in Los Angeles, Ledward, the widow of the “Black Panther” star, accused Derrick and Kevin Boseman of orchestrating a “baseless attack” cloaked in their parents’ authority. The brothers had sued in July on behalf of Leroy and Carolyn Boseman, claiming Ledward failed to properly distribute the actor’s estate per a 2022 court order. Ledward’s response paints a starkly different picture: she says she has distributed nearly every asset down to 88 cents in unclaimed property, with one account blocked only by the brothers’ own legal maneuvering.
Ledward’s attorney, Adam Streisand, wrote in the fiery filing that his client “has not only complied with the Order, but as a product solely of her own extraordinary generosity, she has gone well beyond what was required of her.”
“Simone’s generosity has been both financial and collaborative. She has always included the Boseman family in her efforts to ensure Chadwick’s memory would endure and flourish long after her husband’s tragic and untimely death,” the papers state.
The response escalates from there: “This is how the family repays her: a Petition replete with falsehoods under oath, purposefully used as a public-relations stunt to smear Simone in the tabloid press, not to mention the collateral damage it has caused to her husband’s legacy.”
Streisand also noted that Derrick and Kevin are not themselves legal heirs, writing that the attack comes from “Chadwick’s brothers (who are not among Chadwick’s legal heirs) cloaked with authority by their ailing parents (who, along with Simone, are the rightful heirs).”
The documents lay out a detailed accounting of what Ledward says she has distributed: $151,558 from a Bank of America account, 100 shares of Chadwick Boseman, Inc. Valued at nearly $3.4 million, a $40,000 life insurance policy, another bank account holding $241,180.75, and that 88-cent unclaimed property item. A $300,000 IRA remains undistributed, but Ledward claims that is because the brothers’ own previous legal action blocked it.
The generosity extends beyond court-ordered obligations, according to the filing. Ledward voluntarily gifted more than $300,000 of her own money to Derrick’s four children. She also established the Chadwick Boseman Foundation for the Arts, licensed his play “Deep Azure” for a acclaimed run at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, and secured a documentary deal — all structured, her team says, to benefit both sides of the family equally and with the brothers’ knowledge and participation.
Residual income tells another part of the story. The estate received roughly $300,000 in SAG-AFTRA residuals since Boseman’s death. Under the court order, these split 50% to Ledward and 25% each to Chadwick’s parents. Yet per his parents’ request, Ledward directed $75,000 each to Derrick and Kevin for the 2020-2024 period — $150,000 total that she was not required to give them.
The timing of the brothers’ lawsuit also drew sharp criticism. The filing claims Derrick and Kevin had previously threatened litigation against Ledward when she was “struggling with her grief” on the first anniversary of Boseman’s death. Then, five years after his passing, the suit landed with a media splash.
“Five years later, without even a hint of concern or complaint, the brothers’ lawsuit — including many of its false allegations — was somehow reported in detail by the outlet before Simone knew a thing about it,” the docs state.
Ledward’s team leaves no room for ambiguity on her stewardship: “To be clear, no Estate asset has been lost, wasted, or mismanaged.” The filing emphasizes she “has administered the Estate transparently and in consultation with Petitioners at every meaningful step, without any requirement or obligation to do so.”
The court papers also illuminate the final days of Boseman’s private life. The actor died without a will at 43 on Aug. 28, 2020, after years of quietly battling colon cancer. He and Ledward married just six days earlier, on Aug. 21, 2020, with Derrick himself officiating the ceremony.
“Simone stood by Chadwick’s side and cared for him throughout his battle with cancer. It was no surprise that, notwithstanding the end of his life was near, Chadwick wanted Simone to be his wife,” the documents state.
Derrick and Kevin’s original suit had alleged Ledward, who inherited half the estate, was supposed to split the remainder equally between Chadwick’s parents — 25% each — and that nearly four years post-order, she still had not finished distribution. Their petition framed her as withholding what rightfully belonged to the elder Bosemans.
Ledward’s response frames the entire dispute as not just legally hollow but personally cruel — a widow who nursed her husband through terminal illness, who gave hundreds of thousands of her own dollars to his family, now defending her name against accusations she calls fabricated for tabloid consumption.
The brothers’ original allegations centered on claims that Ledward had delayed or concealed estate assets meant for Leroy and Carolyn Boseman. Their petition sought her removal as administrator, a role she has held since the probate process began after Chadwick’s death without a will. California intestacy law, combined with the 2022 court order, established the framework for how his multi-million dollar estate would be divided among his surviving spouse and parents.
Boseman kept his colon cancer diagnosis almost entirely secret through four years of filming, including the “Black Panther” blockbusters that made him a global star. He completed multiple projects between surgeries and chemotherapy, revealing nothing publicly until his family announced his passing. That same privacy surrounded his relationship with Ledward, a singer he had reportedly begun dating before his diagnosis. Their marriage in the final week of his life was not publicly known until after his death.
