Chicago educator ‘compelled to step down’ after posting brief pro-ICE remark on social media

An experienced teacher with more than ten years in the field has allegedly been forced to resign from his position after expressing support for ICE on social media.

James Heidorn, a physical education teacher at Gary Elementary School in West Chicago, faced backlash last month after he commented ‘GO ICE’ in response to an article about local police agreeing to cooperate with immigration authorities.

His comment received criticism from community members and local politicians, including West Chicago Mayor Daniel Bovey, who addressed the issue.

Mayor Bovey described Heidorn’s post as ‘hurtful’ and ‘offensive’ in a Facebook video.

In response to the controversy, the school placed Heidorn on leave while conducting an investigation into his actions.

Initially, Heidorn submitted his resignation but later withdrew it. However, he resigned once more before any potential termination could occur.

Heidorn has now spoken about the situation, describing it as both ‘professionally and personally devastating and surreal’.

“This started with a two-word comment on my personal Facebook page supporting law enforcement—nothing more,” he shared with Fox News. “It wasn’t directed at any student, family or school community.”

He continued, “Second, I was placed on leave and faced intense pressure before any full investigation or fair process could play out, which led to my resignation.

“Third, I lost my career, my income and the opportunity to properly say goodbye to my students—no farewell, no goodbyes.”

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for Heidorn following his resignation, which has garnered over $60,000 in contributions at the time of writing.

The page description mentions: “James Heidorn, a beloved physical education teacher at Gary Elementary School, resigned after a single social media comment ignited outrage and a one-sided account that quickly spiraled beyond control. What followed was not reflection or fairness, but permanent consequences that have changed the course of his life.

“For 14 years, James showed up every day for his students, motivating them and building relationships beyond the gym, where class was often the highlight of their day and the first thing they talked about at home.”

The creator of the page also stated that a ‘false narrative’ about Heidorn was constructed, leading to his immediate loss of work opportunities.

It is reported that after resigning, Heidorn also lost his position as a soccer coach at a private school.

Attempts have been made to contact West Chicago Elementary School District 33 for a statement.
