Istanbul’s Most Famous Cat Passed Away So The City Honored Him With A Bronze Statue

This very relaxed cat is known as Tombili, an affectionate Turkish term used for chubby pets.

He lived in Istanbul, Turkey, and captured the hearts of everyone when someone posted a photo of her just chilling on the sidewalk in 2015.

Tombili was a very friendly cat according to Aksoy, one of the founders of the Anatolian Cat Project. The community took care of her but as she was very overweight she couldn’t move very much. That’s why she mostly lay down, propping one kitty elbow on the sidewalk.

The chubby feline passed away last August and the locals decided to pay tribute to Tombili by building a bronze statue right where she used to relax and watch the world go by.

It was artist Seval Şahin who made the bronze sculpture to remind everyone to take some time to sit, pause and smell the flowers.

The memorial opened last October 4th and dozens of people (and some cats) have been flocking to pay their respects to the city’s most beloved furry citizen.

“You will live in our hearts. Mascot of our street, beloved Tombili lost his struggle for life after a month and closed his eyes to life on first of August,” wrote one of Tombili’s fans on a note near the statue.
