Many children dream of becoming astronauts, but that ambition might change if they understood what happens to the human body without a spacesuit.
However, it’s worth noting that NASA and other major space agencies would never send someone into space without a spacesuit.
Even so, the outcome of being in space without one is far from pleasant. The likelihood of surviving such an ordeal is virtually zero.
If your morbid curiosity has piqued your interest, here’s a glimpse of what would occur:
A video by DG EYE science on YouTube details the frightening scenario of being ‘accidentally thrown out of your spacesuit’.
While not a common situation, the video provides some unexpected insights.
The video clarifies that you wouldn’t explode, so you can put that worry aside. Depending on your perspective on death, you might actually prefer it.
Instead, within seconds, the gases in your body will start to expand and the air in your lungs will cause your lung tissue to rupture.
Within five seconds, the water on the surface of your eyes, skin, and mouth will begin to evaporate, and the water in your blood will start to boil.
As the simulation continues, the body swells and becomes larger, almost like a human balloon, due to the skin being elastic and strong enough to withstand the pressure.
After losing consciousness, your heart would eventually slow down and stop, leading to death by asphyxiation, with the video showing your body turning grey.
According to Popular Science, an astronaut exposed to the vacuum of space would experience their blood vaporizing along with the water in their body within just 10 seconds.
They would lose consciousness in 15 seconds as their body expands and lungs collapse.
Within 30 seconds, the unfortunate astronaut would be either paralyzed or more likely dead, most probably due to asphyxiation or decompression.
If you’re interested in more of these harrowing simulation videos, there’s also a clip that illustrates in gory detail what would happen if you were to fall into a jet airplane engine.
This gruesome scenario starts with a human figure being sucked into the engine before rapidly disintegrating into small red particles, much like a large tomato in a food processor.
The close-up shots reveal just how quickly death would ensue for the unfortunate victim, as there’s hardly anything left of the animation within a few seconds.
Happy thoughts, happy thoughts…
