Fans of Chris Evans were completely blindsided when they heard the Captain America actor break out into his real accent for an interview.
Thanks to his appearances in a whole range of movies over more than two decades, you might think you know exactly what Chris Evans sounds like.
We’ve heard him challenge supervillains in his Marvel movies, charm people in rom-coms and spark intrigue in the murder-mystery Knives Out – but throughout much of his career, Evans’ real accent has been kept off the screen.
Instead, the actor’s accent has mostly been a fairly neutral American one, but the way he spoke in this particular interview proved he’s never far from his roots.
Evans’ real accent slipped out during a chat with Access Hollywood as he was doing the rounds to promote his 2022 Netflix movie, The Grey Man.
Evans grew a mustache for the role, and during the interview, he asked the reporter whether they preferred ‘Mustache or no mustache’.
“Be honest,” Evans continued. “Be honest.”
While the topic of conversation was firmly on Evans’ facial hair, people were more shocked at what actually came out of his mouth after the video was shared online.
It’s hard to ignore the telltale Boston accent slipping through in Evans’ words, but considering the actor was born in the city, it makes sense that this is how he actually speaks.
But that didn’t stop many fans from being caught totally off guard.
A number of baffled viewers took to social media to share their confusion after seeing the clip, with one person joking: “Chris Evans asking ‘moustache or no moustache’ in his Boston accent should be illegal and grounds for arrest.”
Another wrote: “Chris Evans putting that Boston accent into overdrive now that he’s done with Marvel.”
One person noted the actor’s real accent as actually a good indicator of his skills, as they wrote: “Chris Evans is a much better actor than I previously thought if he’s been hiding this thick a** Boston accent the whole time.”
“I can’t stop thinking about Chris Evans’ Boston accent and it’s sending me into a spiral,” added another viewer.
Obviously we don’t want Evans to feel like he can’t speak in the accent he was raised with, but it seems clear that people are much more comfortable hearing the more neutral accent he pulls out for movies. Still, if Evans decides to go back to full Boston, we’ll just have to deal with it.
