Collin Gosselin unleashed years of pent-up anger at his estranged mother, Kate Gosselin, during a brutal combat challenge on Thursday’s episode of “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test.”
The 22-year-old, whose mother competed on the Fox reality series in its first season, was pushed by directing staff to tap into his darkest emotions for a task requiring recruits to summon “extreme violence” and then shut it down on command. Staff member Jason Fox explained the exercise demanded “controlled aggression,” the ability to perform like a “lunatic killer” and instantly power down when ordered.
Before Collin entered the fray, staff member Q zeroed in on his childhood wounds. “This is your chance for revenge. Use that anger, use that rage,” Q instructed him, pressing whether the pain still lingered. Collin confirmed it did.
“I want you to go crazy right now,” Q continued. “When you see red, that’s your mom.”
Collin erupted once the challenge began, screaming with apparent fury as staff member Billy urged him to give “everything you’ve got.” When the stop command finally came, Billy guided him through breathing exercises. “That was your decompression there. To release all those demons. Now, it’s done.”
In a confessional filmed for the episode, Collin made plain how deeply his mother’s shadow hung over his time on the course. “I’m here because my mother has taken a lot of things away from me, but this course is something she can’t take away,” he stated. “She took away my childhood, she took away my freedom — and I have a lot of anger.”
The episode aired as Collin’s memoir, “In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood,” continues to generate headlines following its October 13 release. In the tell-all, he accused the former “Kate Plus 8” star of isolating him from his seven siblings and confining him to what he described as a “small holding cell” for two years, among other disturbing allegations.
In an interview, Collin also claimed Kate once dragged him by the ear with such force that he arrived at school with a swollen ear.
Kate, 49, has forcefully denied every accusation. In TikTok comments, she fired back with her own set of claims, alleging Collin had a “history of violent behavior with weapons towards people, the killing of animals, his regular use of racial slurs, and his ‘physical behavior.'”
Collin’s representative, Adriane Schwartz, issued a pointed rebuttal Tuesday. “Let us be absolutely clear: Collin has never used a weapon to harm a family member, nor has he ever harmed or killed an animal in his lifetime,” she stated. “These allegations are categorically false… To publicly accuse your innocent child of such heinous acts to protect your reputation is beyond reprehensible.”
Ahead of Thursday’s broadcast, Collin posted photos from his “Special Forces” experience on Instagram alongside a message of resilience. “You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only option,” he wrote.
The Gosselin family fracture has played out publicly since the 2009 divorce of Jon and Kate Gosselin, whose TLC series “Jon & Kate Plus 8” documented life with their twins and sextuplets. Collin was removed from the family home and placed in a facility for children with special needs in 2016, an experience he has since characterized as abusive isolation orchestrated by his mother. Jon Gosselin eventually gained custody of Collin in 2018, and the father and son have maintained an alliance against Kate’s version of events.
Collin’s “Special Forces” appearance marks a full-circle moment of sorts, given that Kate endured the same grueling regimen three years prior on the show’s debut season. Where she once represented the family name in the special-operations-themed competition, her estranged son has now used the platform to publicly process the damage he attributes to her.
Fox has not yet announced renewal plans for a fourth season of “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test.”
