Colorado quarterback Dominiq Pinder has died following a devastating crash, police confirmed after an early-morning incident on Sunday. He was 23.
The University of Colorado sophomore was killed in a single-vehicle collision that happened at around 3am. News of his death prompted an outpouring of grief from Buffaloes teammates and staff, who remembered him as a respected presence within the program.
Head coach Deion Sanders shared a heartfelt message on X, asking for prayers for Pinder’s loved ones and writing that ‘Dom was one of my favorites.’
Sanders added: “He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let’s pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord you’re receiving a good 1. Comfort us Lord Comfort us.”

Colorado athletic director Fernando Lovo also released a statement mourning the loss, saying: “The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder.
“He epitomized the values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time.”
According to the Colorado State Patrol, Pinder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 when the crash occurred. Investigators said he lost control while navigating a curve, and the vehicle crossed lanes before impact.
Police said the Tesla struck a guardrail and an electricity pole, then rolled down an embankment and caught fire. Pinder was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers said their initial findings indicate that ‘speed is suspected as a factor’.
Pinder was a third-year sophomore who moved to Colorado from Florida. He had spent the past two seasons with the Buffaloes after after transferring from Bethune-Cookman.
Offensive coordinator Brennan Marion reposted Sanders’ message and described Pinder as someone he valued coaching. He said: “Getting that call from his dad today didn’t feel real.
“Love you Dom! God cover his family & our team, especially our qb room!”
Tributes also came from teammates, including fellow quarterback Colton Allen, who wrote: “Dom, you were a blessing to so many people.
“You had a presence about you that just made everything better. You brought so much joy to me and everyone around you. I’m grateful for every lift, every practice, every rep, every conversation we got to share. I’ll carry those with me for the rest of my life.”
